Timothée Chalamet has had a pretty generational run over the last few years – from securing himself three separate Best Actor nominations to helming some of this decades biggest franchises (who else can't get the chant from the new Dune 3 film trailer out of their head?) – but the actor shows no signs of slowing down yet. In fact, it looks like he's set to produce a new film called Playground – based off the Booker Prize longlisted novel of the same name – which he might just star in too.
Chalamet is no stranger to a cerebral, character-driven sci-fi – but if he does take the lead role, we're expect something more introspective than leading an intergalactic war. Here's what we know so far about the film...
What's the plot?
This will be a film for those whose bread-and-butter are thoughtful, slightly mind-bending sci-fis (for fans of Ex Machina or even Transformers). It's based on the Booker Prize longlisted novel by Richard Powers from 2024 and follows Todd Keane and his two closest friends as they journey from university life into the heart of Silicon Valley’s tech boom.
But this isn’t just another “rise of tech bros” story. The narrative stretches all the way to a remote Polynesian island, weaving together themes of friendship, love, and – most intriguingly – the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence (poignant, really). It’s very much in the tradition of smart, reflective sci-fi, the kind that asks big questions rather than just throwing spectacle at you.
Who is involved in the cast and production?
The big headline here is Timothée Chalamet, who is attached as both a producer and a potential star. As producer, he has first right of refusal at playing the central character – which of course, we'd love to see happen. Backing him is Warner Bros. Pictures, alongside Plan B (Brad Pitt’s production company), which has a solid track record with awards-friendly projects.
When will it be released?
There’s no confirmed release date just yet. The project is still in development, meaning it’s in that early stage where scripts are shaped and creative teams are assembled.
In film terms, that means we’re probably a year or two away at least. But given the talent attached and the strength of the source material, it’s definitely one to keep on your radar.
