What is The Survivors about?

Yerin Ha plays Mia Chang, a woman who returns to her partner Kieran’s coastal hometown of Evelyn Bay — a town still scarred by a devastating tragedy 15 years earlier. Two lives were lost and a teenage girl disappeared, and no one’s really moved on. When another young woman is found dead on the beach, old secrets begin to resurface — some closer to home than anyone’s comfortable with. As tensions rise, so does the question: what really happened back then?

Who’s in the cast?

Alongside Ha, the cast is stacked with Australian talent, including Charlie Vickers (best know for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power) as Kieran Elliott, and Robyn Malcolm as Kieran’s emotionally withdrawn mother.

There's also Damien Garvey as Brian Elliott, Kieran’s father, and Thom Green (who recently starred in Apple Cider Vinegar) as Sean Gilroy. Rounding our the ensemble is George Mason, Jessica De Gouw, Shannon Berry, and Miriama Smith.

Where was The Survivors filmed?

Though Evelyn Bay is fictional, the landscape is very real. Shot throughout Tasmania, the setting is both beautiful and eerie — sea caves, jagged cliffs, and relentless tides provide the perfect emotional backdrop for the series’ themes of grief, guilt, and memory. Though the actual filming locations span much of the state, some of the most recognisable spots include Hinsby Beach, a popular Hobart swimming spot, Eaglehawk Neck, Geeveston, New Norfolk, Taroona, Kingston, Fern Tree, and Blackmans Bay.

Is The Survivors based on a book?

Yes, the series is adapted from Jane Harper’s bestselling novel of the same name. If her name sounds familiar, Harper was also the author behind The Dry, which went on to be adapted into a film starring Eric Bana.

First published in 2020, The Survivors earned a cult following for it's seamless blend of mystery and emotional realism. Translating the story for television was showrunner Tony Ayres.

Will The Survivors get a sequel?

As it stands, The Survivors is billed as a limited series, and its story  ties up most of its loose ends by the final episode. But in the 2025, no ending is ever entirely final. Given the show’s critical reception, the strength of its cast, and Netflix’s growing appetite for high-quality Australian drama, a sequel or spin-off isn’t out of the question. Whether that means a return to Evelyn Bay or a new Harper adaptation with a fresh cast, we'd certainly tune in.
