I’ve never once contemplated working in a hospital — and after watching The Pitt, I’m fairly certain I’m not cut out for it. But two seasons in, and I feel like I’ve basically lived the experience.
Now, the next shift is officially on the way. The Pitt was renewed for a third season in January 2026 (which was before second season even aired). Production began in June 2026, so things are definitely starting to take shape.
And while there’s still plenty we don’t know, the details that have emerged suggest season three will look a little different. From the timeline to the characters, here's everything we know about The Pitt season three.
When will The Pitt season three be released?
Season three is expected to premiere in January 2027, although HBO Max has yet to announce an exact release date. Executive producer John Wells previously told Deadline the intention was to return in January with another 15 episodes, maintaining the show's annual release schedule.

Season three will take place just a few months after season two
Season two of the hit medical series jumped ahead 10 months from the events of season one, but apparently season three won't occur as far into the future.
Instead, the story will take place in November 2026 – roughly four months after the events of season two. Noah Wyle revealed the specific date to Deadline, explaining that the season will be written around the real-world moment in which it is set. In particular, he said the move into colder weather would allow the show to explore cases associated with snow and cold.
The shift to November will also address the looming impact of the US government's 'Big Beautiful Bill' – which is said to see around 10 million people to lose access to health insurance.

There are several new faces in the ER
In addition the characters we know and love, there will be new medical staff and patients.
Chris Diamantopoulos will join as Dr Asher Grossman, the Chief Medical Officer of PTMC, a new senior figure into the hospital hierarchy. There's also JB Tadena who will play Dr Reed Thomas, a physician.
Several actors have confirmed to play patients of the emergency department, including Hannah Ware as Charlotte Boyle, Lawrence Kao as Harold Joslyn, Brent Sexton as Daryl Oates, Stephen Chang as Mitch Connors and Barry Clifton as David “Bear” Burton.
They join the previously announced season three additions Pruitt Taylor Vince, Malachi Beasley, Cheyenne Perez, Jeremy Radin, Charlz Williams and Rosanny Zayas, who are also set to appear in recurring roles.
What will season three be about?
Once again, Dr Robby will be at the focus of the new season. We're set to see him navitaging his return from his sabbatical and, according to Wyle, beginning "the therapeutic road".
Baran will continue navigating her diagnosis and her place in the ER, while Santos and Langdon's complicated relationship is expected to move slowly rebuild
Cassie McKay will return for season three, and Fiona Dourif has hinted to TVLine that her character's next chapter will explore a theme that is particularly personal to the actor. Dourif described it as “exciting and scary and cool”, but stopped short of revealing exactly what it involves.
Javadi is leaving the ER
But just to be clear Shabana Azeez isn't leaving The Pitt. However her character, Victoria Javadi, is moving to another department.
After completing her ER rotation, Javadi will undertake a psychiatry rotation in season three. Azeez described it to Bustle as a "very different vibe" from the ER and said she is excited to explore another side of medicine.
