If you’ve ever watched an episode of The Pitt (and if you haven't, why not?) and found yourself wondering who is operating, who is being yelled out, who is having a personal crisis... I could go on. Well, you're not alone. The award-winning medical drama has an expansive cast of doctors, nurses, residents and medical students working amongst the chaos of the Pittsburgh emergency room.
Below is your guide to exactly who's who in The Pitt, across season one and two. Warning, spoilers ahead.
Dr Michael 'Robby' Robinavitch (Noah Wyle)
Role: Attending physician
Robby is the show's central character. He's worked in the emergency trauma centre for years, and knows how to keep the chaos organised. He is demanding and sometimes abrasive, but also empathetic when it counts, and deeply committed to his patients and the doctors he is training.
Robby is also carrying personal trauma, including the loss of his mentor, Dr Michael Dwyer during COVID, and his fraught relationship with Dr Langdon, one of the senior residents under his charge.
Dr Frank Langdon (Patrick Ball)
Role: Senior resident
When we meet Langdon, he is one of Robby's most promising protégés. But his future success is halted when it is revealed that Langdon is struggling with substance abuse, and has been stealing medication from the hospital. He leaves the Pitt at the end of season one, and returns in season two after a ten-month rehab stint.
Dana Evans (Katherine LaNasa)
Role: Charge nurse
Robby might be the attending, but I'd argue Dana is the one who's really in charge of the Pitt. As charge nurse, she is responsible for keeping the emergency department moving, which means managing staff, allocating patients to rooms, and just generally keeping an eye on what's going on. She is practical, direct, extremely good at her job (although definitely a little burnt out), with little time for the egos that can come with being a doctor.
Dr Samira Mohan (Supriya Ganesh)
Role: Senior resident
Mohan is careful and methodical with her patients – but this also earns her the nickname 'Slow-Mo' from colleagues who think she needs to move faster. Her empathy is rooted in a personal history – her father died following a heart attack that was initially dismissed by doctors. In season two, we see her considering different paths for her future and confronting what she actually wants from a career in medicine.
Dr Heather Collins (Tracy Ifeachor)
Role: Senior resident
Collins is one of the senior doctors working alongside Robby. Her story gives the series room to explore what happens when a doctor is dealing with their own stresses amidst the demands of their job. In season one, she sadly has a miscarriage while on the job, after trying to become a mother on her own with IVF. Her story ends in season one - by season two, we learn that she has moved to Portland.
Dr Cassie McKay (Fiona Dourif)
Role: Resident
Another of the Pitt's more experienced doctors, and also one of the most compassionate. There's plenty more to McKay than meets the eye – she has a past struggle with addiction (which is why she wears an ankle monitor in season one), and is a devoted single mother to her son, Harrison. These experiences mean McKay is one of the most empathetic doctors in the Pitt, particular when it comes to her work with unhoused patients as a volunteer on the Street Team.
Dr Melissa King (Taylor Dearden)
Role: Resident
Mel arrives at the Pitt as a relatively inexperienced resident. Over time, she becomes more assured in the ER while confronting the emotional consequences of the job. Central to her storyline is her relationship with her sister, Becca, who is autistic and lives in a community care facility.
Dr Trinity Santos (Isa Briones)
Role: Student doctor, then resident
Santos is ambitious and competitive, and although she seems confident, she is also dealing with her own personal struggles. Her demeanour sometimes puts her at odds with her colleagues, particularly in season one. She is the doctor who, on the first day of the job, outed Langdon for his drug abuse to Robby, and in season two, we see just how much this has impacted her.
Dr Dennis Whitaker (Gerran Howell)
Role: Student doctor, then resident
Whitaker starts out as a student doctor who, although starts out a little overwhelmed by the chaos of the Pitt, really comes into his own by season two. An important part of his story is his inability to separate himself emotionally from his patients. In season two, this manifests as him spending time with the widow of one of his deceased patients. Fun fact, the actor Gerran Howell is actually Welsh.
Victoria Javadi (Shabana Azeez)
Role: Student doctor
Javadi is at the very beginning of her medical career, but she is one of the most intelligent and capable of all the medical students. Her relationhsip with her parents – both doctors at the same hospital who have big ideas for their daughter – is a central focus across both seasons. And in the second half of season two, we learn she is also a burgeoning TikTok star. The role is played by RUSSH digital cover star (and Australian actor) Shabana Azeez.
Dr Jack Abbot (Shawn Hatosy)
Role: Attending physician
Abbot is another attending, though he usually working the night shift. He is a former military combat medic and amputee, and also has a close friendship with Robby. Outside the hospital, he works as a physician with the SWAT team, putting the skills he developed in the military to use in another high-pressure environment.
Dr Baran Al-Hashimi (Sepideh Moafi)
Role: Attending physician
Al-Hashimi joins the Pitt in Season 2, as Robby's upcoming replacement while he prepares for a three-month holiday. She is highly experienced and has worked in conflict zones, bringing a very different perspective to the emergency department. We learn towards the end of season two that, beneath her stoic exterior, Al-Hashimi is struggling to manage a health condition of her own.
Perlah Alawi (Amielynn Abellera)
Role: Nurse
Perlah is one of the nurses who helps keep the Pitt functioning amid the constant stream of patients. She sometimes steps in as charge nurse when Dana is unavailable.
Princess (Kristin Villanueva)
Role: Nurse
Princess is another senior member of the nursing team who becomes increasingly familiar as the series progresses. She gives another perspective on the Pitt's relentless workload, particularly as the nurses often have to manage issues that doctors don't see.
James Ogilvie (Lucas Iverson)
Role: Student doctor
Ogilvie is intelligent, but almost to a fault. He is able to immediately answer any hypothetical, but struggles a little when it comes to high-pressure moments and patient empathy. Over the course of season two, Ogilvie is forced to confront the difference between being academically gifted and being able to handle the emotional weight of medicine.
Joy Kwon (Irene Choi)
Role: Student doctor
It's hard to get a read on Joy at first. She arrives at the Pitt with a somewhat detached attitude towards emergency medicine, preferring the intellectual puzzle of medicine to the messy reality of dealing with patients. As her time in the ER progresses, however, that distance begins to soften. She also has a strong sense of her own boundaries, refusing to stay overtime in a job notorious for burnout.
