After redefining global television with Squid Game, South Korean filmmaker Hwang Dong-hyuk is officially returning to Netflix with a brand-new drama series titled The Dealer. The acclaimed creator is expanding his partnership with the streaming giant, this time diving into the shadowy world of professional gambling and white-collar crime.
What is The Dealer about?
Unlike the brutal survival arenas that defined Squid Game, The Dealer shifts its focus to psychological tension and moral compromise.
The series follows Geonhwa, a highly skilled former casino dealer whose carefully built life unravels just before her wedding. After falling victim to a predatory housing fraud scheme that wipes out her savings, Geonhwa is forced back into the high-stakes gambling underworld she once escaped. What begins as an act of survival quickly becomes a dangerous descent into systemic corruption, manipulation, and power plays.
Who is in the cast?
South Korean actress Jung So-min has been confirmed in the lead role. She is joined by a formidable supporting cast that includes Ryoo Seung-bum, Lee Soo-hyuk, and Ryu Kyung-soo – names well known for bringing intensity and nuance to complex characters. Together, the ensemble promises a character-driven narrative where intelligence and psychological endurance are the ultimate currency.
Who else is involved in the project?
Directed by Choi Young-hwan and written by Ohnooy alongside Lee Tae-young, The Dealer also represents a personal shift for Hwang.
After the physical and mental toll of directing every episode of Squid Game, he steps back into an executive producer role, guiding the project’s vision while allowing new creative voices to shape its execution.
When will it be released?
At this point, there hasn't been any official word from Netflix about an official release date or time frame for production. We'd venture to guess that the show won't be available to watch until at least 2027 on the streaming platform, but we'll keep you updated as we hear more.
