Here’s how Taylor Jenkins Reid’s new book, ‘Atmosphere’, will be different

atmosphere

It’s been three years since Taylor Jenkins Reid released a new novel, but in that time, her following has only grown. Adaptations of Daisy Jones & The Six and The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo catapulted her into the pop-cultural literary canon, positioning her not just as a bestselling author but as a defining voice of our generation. Her stories — ripe with scandal, vintage wardrobes, and emotional excavation — are touchstones for readers who crave both escapism and intimacy.

So when news broke that Reid’s next book, Atmosphere, would orbit far beyond the Old Hollywood backlots and Sunset Boulevard parties we’ve come to expect from her, we were curious. Released this June, Atmosphere promises something different, in both setting and substance. Don't worry, Reid isn’t abandoning the themes that made her a literary phenomenon, but she is taking them somewhere unexpected: space. Here's what we know.

What is Atmosphere about?

Atmosphere is set in the early 1980s and follows Joan Goodwin, a no-nonsense astronomy professor with a sharp intellect and a hunger for something more. When she’s recruited to join NASA’s historic shuttle program, Joan finds herself at the center of an elite, male-dominated world of astronauts and engineers. What unfolds is not just a story of space exploration but of self-discovery and forbidden love.

At the heart of the novel is Joan’s relationship with Vanessa Ford, a brilliant systems engineer working behind the scenes. Their connection drives the emotional gravity of the book, with Reid describing Atmosphere as “a sapphic love story."

Will Atmosphere be adapted for the screen?

No, you're not getting ahead of yourself. Atmosphere does already have a film adaptation in place.

Captain Marvel filmmakers Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck are on board to adapt and direct the project, which is still i the very early stages of development.

Speaking to Who What Wear about the project, Jenkins said, "When we were talking about who can pull off something so big in scope that it feels epic but also has that punch, [Anna] Boden and [Ryan] Fleck were the first people to come to mind." She continued, "They're going to write and direct this movie. I could not be more thrilled. It is very rare in this life that you get to work with the team that loomed so large in your mind as a dream collaborator. I could not be happier, and I want them to get started immediately because I want to see the movie."
