Gwyneth Paltrow is about to play our new favourite prestige divorcée

Netflix has officially won the high-stakes bidding war for Belle Burden’s buzzy memoir, Strangers: A Memoir of Marriage – and with a seven-figure deal secured and a certain Goop founder attached to star, the project is already being hailed as the prestige divorce drama of the decade. If you ask us, it's perfect casting – who better to play a prestige divorcée that the queen of conscious uncoupling and serving out-of-touch courtroom looks herself?

What's the film going to be about?

It's based on Burden’s viral New York Times "Modern Love" essay, and tracks the disintegration of a life lived in the highest of echelons – Upper East Side New York. (The memoir spent nine weeks on the bestseller list.)

Burden herself – a descendant of the Vanderbilts and Paleys – was the ultimate Truman Capote "swan" archetype, until her husband of 20 years walked out during the first week of COVID lockdowns.  She wrote that there were no custody battles and no explanations – it was just a clean, clinical break from a life of Martha’s Vineyard clubs and private schools.

The essay – and subsequently, we imagine, the film – is a visceral exploration of shame, abandonment, and the slow process of being "seen" again

Who else is involved?

The lineup is largely female-led. We have Gwyneth Paltrow – currently in the midst of an acting renaissance following her turn in A24’s Oscar-nominated Marty Supreme set to star and executive produce. She’ll be joined by Broadway playwright Heidi Schreck (What the Constitution Means to Me), who’s pulling double duty right now also penning the live-action She-Ra for Amazon. Stacey Sher – the producer behind Erin Brockovich and the upcoming Anne Hathaway-led Verity – is also on board.

When will it be released?

There’s no firm date yet, but we think Netflix will likely push for a late 2027 release to keep Paltrow in the awards conversation.
