Sophie McIntyre’s guide to the best wellness spots in Melbourne

Sophie McIntyre knows what makes a table worth lingering at – and a place worth coming back to.

As the founder of roaming supper club Club Sup, McIntyre’s world revolves around good food, good people and an instinct for places that get the details right. Her Melbourne is no different. There’s the bathhouse for disappearing from your phone, the facial she credits with her best skin ever, a coffee shop made for escaping the home office and seasonal produce worth planning your day around.

Naturally, food gets serious consideration. There’s a Pesto Power bowl that leaves her “walking taller”, farmers’ market mornings and a Carlton restaurant she calls her favourite ever (with strict instructions not to skip dessert). Here, McIntyre shares the Melbourne addresses that have earned a permanent place in her rotation.

Best spot for a workout?

The Commons Health Club. Everything you will ever need is under one roof and in one membership. Reformer and mat Pilates, yoga, spin, weights and strength classes. It’s also deeply focused on recovery – there’s a phenomenal bath house with electrolytes on standby. Not a single detail is missed.

Best spot to unwind and reset?

Sense of Self. Quiet time, no phones, tea and the best sans [ceuticals] products. True heaven.

Best spot for a facial?

HÜD in Northcote or South Yarra. Their goal is that you don’t see them. In the lead-up to my wedding I’ve been having Aerolase Neo Elite facials and oh my goodness… my skin has never, ever looked better.

And massage?

I don’t love massages… Although if I need a tension release, I head to Jane at Embody Balance in Brunswick. I no longer clench my jaw because of her.

The best coffee in the city?

I like Standing Room in Fitzroy North. I love going there when I need to get out of the house and do some work. I love a lactose–free cappuccino – although Melbourne has not caught up! So, I’ll order a Soy Cap.

Best place for a nourishing meal?

Crop on Smith St or near my office in Cremorne. Frankie is so deeply dedicated to using the best of what is available and in season. Every time I eat there, I feel like I walk away taller. Order the Pesto Power – it has slow-roasted fennel and it’s everything. I add parm and chicken.

Best spot for a leisurely weekend walk?

In spring I love the Yarra Creek walk from Fitzroy North to Abbotsford. It comes alive and really makes you thank winter for all the buds and flowers. In autumn, the leaves are also beautiful.

If I need to stock up on beauty or wellness essentials, I head to…

HÜD. I’m heavily in a DMK Skincare world right now, and I don’t think I will leave for a while. But when it comes to beauty, it really is the Mecca Mothership on Bourke St. I don’t think a lot of us realise how lucky we are to have that store on our doorstep. It is actually perfect.

The best farmer’s markets?

If I can’t get to the Carlton North Farmer’s market at the Carlton North Primary school, I’ll go to Toscano’s in Hawksburn.

A hidden gem?

Bistra in Carlton. The team is so in love with dining, food, design, and hospitality. It’s my favourite restaurant ever. Do not ever miss the dessert.
