Sydney is getting Australia’s first exclusive members club Soho House

After years of speculation, Soho House has confirmed that its long-awaited Sydney outpost is officially on its way.

The exclusive private members' club announced this week that Soho House Sydney is scheduled to open in 2028 as construction enters its next phase, marking the brand's first permanent House in Australia. For a city whose creative community has long looked enviously towards Soho Houses in London, New York, Berlin and beyond, it's a significant milestone. Here's what's been confirmed...

Where will Soho House Sydney be located?

The new House will sit just moments from Oxford Street at 256 Crown Street, Darlinghurst, positioned between Darlinghurst and Surry Hills – two neighbourhoods synonymous with Sydney's creative and cultural identity.

The location places Soho House within walking distance of galleries, independent fashion boutiques, restaurants and some of the city's longest-standing arts institutions, making it a natural fit for the brand's global network of creative spaces.

What will Soho House Sydney include?

Spanning five floors, Soho House Sydney has been designed to encourage members to work, socialise and unwind throughout the day and into the evening.

The club has confirmed plans for a collection of indoor and outdoor spaces spread across five floors, with dedicated areas for members to eat, drink and socialise.

Soho House shared sketches of the designs on Instagram Stories (which we've shared below), but you can also take a look at architecture group Tonkin Zulaikha Greer's sleek mockups from a few years ago.

When will Soho House Sydney open?

The current opening date is set for 2028, with construction now moving into its next stage.

One of the site's developers, Trenerry Property, lists the property as still in the 'planning' stage, with construction set to commence in late 2026.

How to join Soho House Sydney

Although applications for membership to the Sydney House have not yet opened, those eager to join the community can apply for a Cities Without Houses membership in Sydney. The membership connects members to Soho House's global network while offering access to curated local events before the permanent House opens.

Sydney’s ‘Cities Without Houses’ community has been operating for seven years now, hosting events during Vivid, the Sydney Biennale, SXSW and even a masked Halloween ball at the Leonardo da Vinci exhibition at the Lume in Melbourne.

Why has it taken so long?

Whispers of a Sydney location have been going around for years – as have details that they would be destined for Melbourne (though Director of Membership at Soho House Esther Brown has confirmed that they are scouting for locations there too).

Back in 2023, Soho House hosted an eight-day SXSW Sydney residency, where they announced that a “Soho House Sydney location will be opening in the coming years” via Instagram.

Details since the original announcement almost three years ago have been slim to none –
