The intersection between fashion and film is one of the RUSSH team’s favourite places to dwell. So, when we heard that two icons of both worlds were stepping behind the camera, our excitement was palpable. Yes, Sofia Coppola is directing her first-ever documentary – and naturally, it’s about Marc Jacobs.
Titled Marc by Sofia (a nod to the designer's beloved Marc by Marc Jacobs line), the film premiered out of competition at the Venice Film Festival in 2025. But for fashion faithfuls who weren't lucky enough to attend (a girl can dream...) it's felt like an age waiting for a glimpse at the project. Now, that's set to change, with the official trailer in our hot little hands. Read on for all the important details.

What is the documentary about?
Creatively, Coppola and Jacobs’ rapport spans decades. She’s long been a muse to the designer, not only starring in campaigns herself, but also shaping visuals for things like the iconic Daisy perfume film campaigns, and collaborating on collections at both Louis Vuitton and, more recently, Heaven by Marc Jacobs. In other words, if anyone is equipped to tell Jacobs' story with nuance, it's Coppola.
We don’t yet know how far back the film will go, or how deep it will dive into the moments that have defined Jacobs’s illustrious career. But knowing Coppola, we can be fairly sure that there will be some stunning visuals, and a tribute that goes way beyond surface level.
It’s already been a prolific few yearsw for Coppola. In 2025, she celebrated 25 years since The Virgin Suicides with a book of behind-the-scenes photographs, the debut release from her publishing imprint, Important Flowers. She also collaborated with Chanel on documenting the House's haute couture legacy, with a new book and podcast released in tandem with the Fall 2025 couture show. Jacobs, meanwhile, continues to defy the rules of fashion longevity, surprising and delighting us with new theatrical, subversive designs each season.
When and where to watch Marc by Sofia
The film is released in US theatres on March 27, 2026. There's no word yet on an Australian release schedule, although we're expecting it to have a limited run at select independent theatres across the country. There's also no streaming service attached to the documentary, but we'll keep you updated when that happens.
