6 shows like ‘Love Story’ that capture the charm of 90s New York

shows like love story

Few love stories have been dissected quite like that of Carolyn Bessette Kennedy and John F. Kennedy Jr. From their discreet first meetings in the early 1990s to their 1996 wedding (and that simple Narciso Rodriguez gown that has truly stood the test of time), their relationship became a cultural fixation. Now, two decades on, that fascination has returned with renewed intensity.

Ryan Murphy's Love Story, led by Sarah Pidegon and Paul Anthony Kelly, has introduced the couple to a new generation, tracing not only the events of their lives but the cultural impact of their image. If, like the RUSSH team, the show has left you with an insatiable hunger for more of New York in the 90s, we've got you covered. It was a decade defined by effortlessly minimalist fashion and electric ambition, all of which unfolded against the backdrop some of the world's most iconic neighbourhoods.

As we wait for more episodes to drop, here are six shows like Love Story worth watching next.

Friends

The ultimate 90s comfort watch, Friends made living in New York (and being a part of this friendship group) seem like a dream.  We don't know how they managed to sit in Central Perk for 90% of the working week, but we're not complaining. Their outfits (in particular, Rachel and Monica's) still live on Pinterest moodboards today. Even better, there's 10 seasons to watch, so you'll be occupied for a while.

Sex and the City

If it's a blend of fashion and dating you're after, look no further. Set in Manhattan, SATC framed dating as cultural commentary and personal style as storytelling. From designer wardrobes to downtown loft living, it distilled the romance of the city into the four distinct perspectives of Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte, and Miranda. We still rewatch this when we're in need of dating and/or style advice.

The Nanny

The show follows Fran Fine (played by Fran Drescher), who becomes the nanny for a wealthy Manhattan family after unexpectedly entering their world. Much of the series focuses on her growing relationship with the her widowed employer, Maxwell. But it's also worth noting that Fran has some impeccable outfits — although they're nothing like CBK's demure looks.

Gossip Girl

Set on the Upper East Side, the series follows a group of (very) privileged teenagers whose lives are chronicled by an anonymous blogger known as Gossip Girl. It's not exactly your typical teenage experience — the show tracks their relationships, rivalries, family tensions and romantic entanglements, with much of the drama unfolding through secrets exposed online. It goes without saying that Blair and Serena put preppy fashion on the map for Millennials.

The Bold Type

If CBK's career at Calvin Klein caught your attention, look no further. Inspired by the lives of women working at a fashion magazine, The Bold Type follows three friends navigating their careers and relationships in New York City. Much of the story takes place inside the magazine office, but the show blends fashion and media culture, charted in the golden age of magazines.

Younger

Another fashion-adjacent series, Younger follows Liza Miller, a woman in her forties who reinvents herself as a twenty-something in order to re-enter the workforce in publishing. Set largely within a New York media company, the show explores themes of age, ambition and identity, alongside romantic storylines and shifting friendships. Fashion also plays a key role in Liza’s transformation, which makes for some great outfit inspiration.
