You'd think by the third Jane Austen adaptation announced this year alone, our interest would start to wain. But no, in 2025 our literary obsession is very much alive and well. Perhaps its because her heroines — observant, emotionally complex, and forever at odds with the structures around them — feel more alive than ever.
Whatever the reason, we’re turning our gaze once more toward the English countryside — this time through the lens of a new adaptation of Sense and Sensibility, with Daisy Edgar-Jones stepping into the role of Elinor Dashwood. Here's what you need to know.
Who is involved?
Edgar Jones will lead the cast as Elinor, the emotionally composed elder Dashwood sister. As we've seen in the likes of Normal People and Where The Crawdads Sing, Edgar-Jones feels like an inspired match for Elinor’s quiet intelligence and suppressed heartache.
The role of her sister, Marianne, has also now been announced, going to fellow English actress, Esmé Creed-Miles. In case you need a refresher, the role was also played by Kate Winslet in the 1995 adaptation. Miles, who is 25, is best known for her roles as the title character in the Amazon Prime series Hanna, as well as the Paramount+ period drama, The Doll Factory.
Behind the scenes are some equally big names, including Australian author Diana Reid, who is responsible for adapting the screenplay. Best known for her contemporary novels exploring gender, youth, and power dynamics, Reid’s involvement suggests this adaptation may bring a sharper, more modern emotional lens to Austen’s world.
Georgia Oakley is on board as director, while Focus Features are producing the project — the studio behind Joe Wright’s Pride & Prejudice (2005) and Emma (2020), signalling a certain pedigree when it comes to Austen on screen.
What is Sense and Sensibility about?
First published anonymously in 1811 under the pseudonym “By a Lady,” Sense and Sensibility marked Jane Austen’s literary debut, paving the way for later classics like Pride and Prejudice, Emma, and Persuasion. The novel centres on sisters Elinor and Marianne Dashwood as they confront heartbreak, shifting fortunes, and the strict social codes of Regency-era England after being uprooted from their family estate in Sussex. Like so many of Austen's famous stories, this one is about the painstaking choice between passion and pragmatism, about how love can be both salvation and sacrifice.
When will it premiere?
At this early stage, there's no release date. We'll be the first to update you when we know more.
