We’re entering the era of the Poet Aesthetic

Trend forecasting has become something of a cultural sport, and few platforms influence aesthetics quite like Pinterest. After correctly anticipating the rise of cottagecore and the clean girl look, the platform’s latest data points toward a new direction for 2026: poetcore.

According to Pinterest, queries related to the "Poet Aesthetic" have surged dramatically, alongside rising searches for cape outfits, satchel bag styling, ribbon ties, and vintage-inspired details. Together, they signal a shift away from the hyper-polished minimalism and maximalist Y2K crazes, and more toward clothing that feels sentimental, historical and layered with literary connotations.

This shift also mirrors a broader fascination with intellectual dressing – garments that imply curiosity, creativity, and depth. Yes, we're joining celebrity book clubs like never before, but now we also want our outfits to reflect that we're an intellectual too. (Just in case you didn't peep our copy of a Patti Smith book in our tote bag or back pocket.)

What is the Poet Aesthetic?

At its essence, it's about atmosphere. It draws inspiration from writers, artists, and thinkers across time – from Victorian-era silhouettes to the beatniks of the 1940s and the 1970s bohemians.

Where dark academia can feel more structured and gothic, the poet aesthetic leans softer, looser and more expressive. Think billowing blouses that catch the wind, tailored waistcoats worn slightly unbuttoned, and garments that appear collected over time rather than perfectly curated

The colour story is intentionally nostalgic too: parchment creams, mossy greens, worn-in browns, charcoal blacks. These hues evoke libraries, ink-stained pages, and countryside landscapes at dusk.

Where are we seeing it?

And obvious point of reference for the "Poet Aesthetic" finding its way into mainstream fashion trends is via Jonathan Anderson's reinvigorated Dior. His debut menswear and womenswear shows last June and September respectively were hallmarked by bar jackets, cravats, neckbands, capes and trousers that felt distinctly literary and historical in their references. His new Dior Book Tote series even featured a series of classic literature – from Ulysses by James Joyce to Bram Stoker's Dracula.

In film, we've found ourselves in something of a gothic book revival – the internet brooding over Jacob Elordi's blouse-donning Heathcliff from Wuthering Heights, or the similarly vested and earring-wearing Paul Mescal in Chloé Zhao's Hamnet (who portrays real-life poet and playwright Shakespeare). Of course there's still raging nostalgia for Timothée Chalamet and Soarise Ronan in Little Women, and Matthew Macfadyen as our ultimate rain-soaked Mr Darcy.

What to look for:

  • Focus less on individual pieces and more on how they interact. The aesthetic thrives on nuance.
  • Find pieces with volume and soft shapes: look for puffed sleeves, flowing skirts, and relaxed trousers in airy fabrics such as linen, silk, and cotton voile.
  • Pair with a bit of tailoring: balance is crucial and structured waistcoats, fitted blazers, and crisp collars anchor the romance with intellectual sharpness.
  • Fabric choice matters – think about what would have been available 200 years ago: lace inserts, velvet, tweed, wool, and slightly crinkled linen add dimension.
  • Accessories make the outfit feel creative and personal: ribbon ties at the neck, vintage lockets, leather satchels, and delicate rings complete the story.
  • Footwear leans timeless and pragmatic. Think: Victorian-inspired lace-up boots, Mary Janes, or classic brogues and loafers.
