It doesn't matter whether you grew up sporty or not. We can pretty much guarantee you've spent your fair share of time in lcoker rooms and on training grounds in recent years. Well, maybe not physically. But watching them (or should we say, the players the occupy them) through shows like Heated Rivalry, which continue to take the world by storm.

And now, sapphic readers might just have their own counterpart to Shane Hollander and Illya Rosanov on the horizon, courtesy of Playing The Field. Here's what you need to know.

What is Playing The Field about?

Based on the bestselling novel Cleat Cute by Meryl Wilsner, Playing The Field is a comedy set within the world of professional women’s soccer.

The series follows the messy and emotionally charged lives of four players on Crescent City, a (fictional) professional team based in New Orleans. At its centre is a will-they-won’t-they romance between newly drafted star player Phoebe Matthews and team captain Grace Henderson, whose dynamic reminds us very much of Shane and Illya: a little bit of rivalry, a lot of attraction.

Around them, the show expands into a wider ensemble in the form of the rest of their team, capturing the friendships, rivalries, ambitions and many personal entanglements that come with elite sport at the highest level.

Who is involved?

Although no actors are yet to sign on, the series has a stacked creative team behind it.

Sarah Tapscott is attached as showrunner, writer and executive producer. Tapscott is best known for her work on The Sex Lives of College Girls and The Big Leap, and is currently a co-executive producer on the upcoming series Not Suitable For Work.

Also executive producing are Jeff Wachtel and Jared Berenholz for Future Shack Entertainment, alongside a particularly notable pair: former professional athletes Sue Bird and Megan Rapinoe, through their production company 'A Touch More', who bring an extra layer of authenticity to the depiction of elite women’s sport.

Author Meryl Wilsner is also on board as an executive producer, ensuring the adaptation stays close to the DNA of the original novel, which has become a standout in contemporary queer romance publishing since its release in 2023.
