There is a particular kind of cultural experience that no longer really exists in advance of itself. Everything is previewed, clipped, ranked, and reduced into something you can decide on before you ever arrive. We're all guilty of reading the menu ahead of dinner, perusing the set list before a concert, taking a virtual tour of the street to lock in on our parking options. But it's for exactly this reason that going blindly into an experience becomes so incantatory.

One such experience is positioned in Sydney's Chippendale – a venue structured around chance and limitation. It's called Phoenix Central Park, and today it dropped its Season XXI programming.

Past programs have included everything from classic to rap to electronic music, and included some of Australia's coolest artists – from Genesis Owusu to Sampha the Great.

Across fifteen performances between July and September, its Season XXI program will be bringing together artists working across contemporary music, sound and performance. Here's what you need to know...

Who is performing and when?

Season XXI runs across three months, with performances presented on select Tuesdays and Thursdays:

July shows:

• Monday 20 July: Abi Lee (an improvising pianist living and working in Melbourne)
• Thursday 30 July: Shock Corridor (a six-piece band blending post-punk, trip-hop, art rock, and dark wave)

August shows:

• Tuesday 4 August: Lauren Tsamouras’ Another Green World (an ensemble act led by pianist and composer Lauren Tsamouras that draws on elements of Greek traditional music to explore her heritage)
• Thursday 6 August: Rafet (producer, DJ, and multi-instrumentalist blending ambient, jazz and drone)
• Tuesday 11 August: Huda the Goddess x Reuben Lewis: Story of Another Soul (powerful spoken word poetry about equality, refuge and women's rights)
• Thursday 13 August: Mouseatouille (sprawling, nine-piece indie folk-rock and chamber-pop band)
• Tuesday 18 August: Mara (composer and curator based in Sydney who plays the viola and collaborates with her laptop)
• Thursday 20 August: Ela Stiles: Rassberry (Sydney-based solo artist exploring folk and electronic genres)
• Tuesday 25 August: Gabriel Fischer: Makronomaly (an in-depth look into sound + movement and its connection to land, culture and emotion)
• Thursday 27 August: Kayps (with opening sets from Zion Garcia b2b Sollyywood)

September shows:

• Tuesday 1 September: ilex (with opening set from Cello Raven)
• Thursday 3 September: Andrea Keller Quartet (improvisational jazz pianist and composer)
• Thursday 17 September: Merryn Jeann (award-winning multidisciplinary alt pop artist and curator)
• Tuesday 22 September: Dumbhead (trip-hop, IDM, and experimental jazz trio)
• Thursday 24 September: Surprise Chef (instrumental quintet that blends 1970s film scores, jazz-funk, and dusty hip-hop samples into a cinematic soul sound)

What is Phoenix Central Park?

It's a performance space in Sydney’s Chippendale precinct dedicated to contemporary music, sound, and experimental performance. At its centre is The Nest, an intimate room designed for close-range listening, where scale and proximity directly shape how work is experienced.

The venue operates with strict capacity limits, prioritising intensity over scale. There is no box office and no public ticket sales. Access is deliberately constrained to preserve the conditions in which the work is intended to be encountered.

How do I come to a show?

All tickets to Phoenix Central Park performances are free and allocated via ballot on their website. Entries are submitted for individual performances, and tickets are drawn at random from the pool of applicants. Most events are limited to two tickets per person.

Obviously, selection is not guaranteed, and the system is designed so that attendance cannot be purchased or secured in advance. It's a game of chance.
