It's been a big few weeks for the Booktok girlies. If you weren’t already excited about the People We Meet on Vacation adaptation, there have been several new developments that should give you a reason to care. First, TikTok sleuths have discovered the first details of the film’s soundtrack via a quiet update on IMDb, and it's already making us emotional. But with a reported mix of 'Cool About It' by boygenius, 'August' by Taylor Swift, 'L-O-V-E' by Nat King Cole and 'Genesis' by Grimes, it's hardly surprising.

If you've read the book, you know these songs feel tailor-made for the story’s will-they-won’t-they intensity. And while Netflix has yet to confirm the full playlist, one TikToker has done the hard work for us, and compiled the tracks into a Spotify playlist. Everybody say thank you.

And secondly, Netflix has dropped a teaser trailer and shared details of the release date.

Below, everything else we know so far about the People We Meet on Vacation movie, including when we’ll finally get to see it.

When will it be released?

Filming officially wrapped in September 2024, with scenes shot in locations like New Orleans and Barcelona — lead actres Emily Bader, in particular, has kept us fed with plenty of BTS snaps shared to her Instagram. But if you were expecting a mid-2025 release date, sadly you were mistaken. Netflix has now announced that the film will air on January 9, 2026.

Who’s in the cast?

The leads are locked in, with Emily Bader set to play the free-spirited Poppy, and The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes star Tom Blyth takes on the role of Alex, her more reserved best friend. The supporting cast is equally stacked, featuring White Lotus star Sarah Catherine Hook, Jameela Jamil, Lucien Laviscount, Lukas Gage, Alan Ruck, and Molly Shannon. The film is being directed by Brett Haley, and the screenplay was adapted by Yulin Kuang.

What’s it about?

The story is borrowed from Emily Henry’s bestselling 2021 novel by the same name, and follows Poppy and Alex, two completely opposite best friends who spend one week together each summer. Over the years, their annual trip becomes something of a ritual neither of them wants to break. But as feelings begin to blur the lines of friendship, they’re forced to confront whether their bond is platonic, romantic, or somewhere in between.
