In a poetic tribute to Australia’s northern landscapes, luxury jeweller Paspaley has unveiled the Blushing Cicada series – an enchanting new chapter within its celebrated Monsoon Collection. Infused with romance, renewal, and the elemental cycles of nature, these exceptional creations transcend ornamentation to become wearable works of art, imbued with profound symbolism and extraordinary craftsmanship.

At the heart of the narrative lies the cicada: a harbinger of change, its call signalling the end of the pearl harvest and the onset of northern Australia’s dramatic wet season. For Paspaley, whose heritage is entwined with the rhythm of the South Sea, the cicada embodies a moment of reunion, reflection, and anticipation for the journeys yet to come.

“Life in this remote part of Australia follows the rhythm of the seasons,” reflects creative director Christine Salter. “The cicada’s song summons our fleet home, heralding both turbulence and renewal.”

The Blushing Cicada series introduces eight meticulously conceived designs, expanding upon the first Cicada pieces launched in 2018. Each jewel reveals a dialogue between tradition and innovation, blending South Sea pearls of incomparable rarity with contemporary artistry. The wings – engineered in 18-carat gold and latticed with precision – come alive through kinetic detailing, offering a sense of animation that mirrors the cicada in flight.

Pearls, carefully selected by the Paspaley family for their natural resemblance to the insect’s form, are paired with luminous gemstones: tourmaline, sapphires, opal, rubellite, and rainbow moonstone. Their blush-toned palette evokes the tender hues of dawn, elevated by the radiance of white diamonds and mother-of-pearl. Together, these elements articulate an aesthetic of elegance, delicacy, and quiet power.

Among the highlights is the Blushing Cicada Pearl Collier, available in limited edition. Conceived to cradle a remarkable 17mm pearl, the design showcases Paspaley’s patented gem-in-pearl setting technique. A spring-loaded button – hidden beneath a gemstone – allows the wings to open and close, transforming the cicada from rest to flight in a gesture both playful and profound. The pendant may be detached, enabling the gem-set chain to be worn independently, underscoring the versatility that defines modern luxury.

Complementing the Collier, the Blushing Cicada Pearl Pendant and Earrings extend the collection’s kinetic artistry, while the Stud Enhancers and Lacewing Cicada Clasp bring fresh dynamism to Paspaley’s iconic strands. Each piece is not only a jewel but a story – an ode to the Kimberley landscape and the eternal cycles of nature.
