At this point, the lead up to a singer dropping new music is almost as fun as actually listening to whatever they've been cooking up. Take the road to Olivia Rodrigo's third album, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, for example, which has been full of the kind of easter eggs that make dropping new music so exciting. Case in point? The news of the album's first single, Drop Dead.
When will Drop Dead be released?
Drop Dead drops (pardon the pun) on April 17, 2026.
The date marks Rodrigo’s official return to music in two years — and also comes nearly two months before the album is set to drop in full. That leads us to wonder if we'll be treated to another single before then...
Fans are already predicting what it will sound like
Rodrigo has a track record of some pretty stellar lead singles, from Vampire to Drivers Licence, so it's hardly surprising that expectation is high.
Over on Reddit, some have noted that Amy Allen is listed as a writer on the album along with Dan Nigro. Allen previously collaborated with Rodrigo onn tracks pretty isn't pretty and scared of my guitar, which sit on the softer side of Rodrigo's discography. While the title of Drop Dead suggests something more cutting, it raises the question of whether this track might lean into something more restrained.
Strengthening this theory, of course, is the shift from purple to pink for OR3 — emphasised by the image released by Rodrigo for Drop Dead.

The clues that built anticipation for Drop Dead
In the weeks leading up to the announcement, Rodrigo gave fans plenty to analyse. In particular, she shared videos to Instagram of a heart-shape lock being secured in cities across the world — London, Paris, New Jersey and Los Angeles.
Unsurprisingly, fans in each location were quick to find the locks IRL, and when they did, they realised they each read a single word that, when combined, read: Drop Dead April 17.
All four pink locks for Olivia Rodrigo’s upcoming album ‘you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love’ have been unveiled:
