Good news: Cole Escola’s ‘Oh, Mary!’ is coming to streaming

Few things have had me contemplating booking a last-minute plane ticket to New York quite like Oh, Mary!.

If, like me, you’ve spent the past two years watching from afar as Cole Escola’s original comedy has become one of Broadway’s hottest tickets, then I have some great news for us both. Oh, Mary! is coming to HBO in 2027, meaning you’ll soon be able to experience it first-hand, no international travel required.

When is Oh, Mary! coming to HBO?

HBO has announced that a filmed performance of Oh, Mary! will debut on HBO Max sometime in 2027. There’s no exact premiere date yet, but we do know that this performance was filmed at London’s Trafalgar Theatre on July 28, 2026.

What is Oh, Mary! about?

Written by and starring Escola, Oh, Mary! is a comedy (very) loosely based on American history.

It's set in the weeks before Abraham Lincoln’s assassination, and imagines his wife, Mary Todd Lincoln as am aspiring cabaret performer desperate to make a name for herself on stage. Her ambitions, however, are not exactly supported by her husband.

The absurdity of it all has had huge critical acclaim – in fact, Oh, Mary! originally started Off Broadway, and when it was transferred to Broadway it made history as the Lyceum Theatre's first production to earn $1 million in a single week. It's since gone on to the West End, and is set to tour North America beginning in September 2026.

As for what Escola himself had to say about the play being converted to screen: “I’m so happy to share this show with a wider audience and spread Oh, Mary! awareness,” he said in a statement. “Knowing about Oh, Mary! is the first step in getting rid of it.”

Who stars in Oh, Mary!?

Alongside Escola, the filmed West End performance stars Giles Terera as Mary’s husband, Bianca Leigh as Mary’s chaperone, Tony Macht as her husband’s assistant and Michael Urie as her teacher.

Although the role of Mary Todd Lincoln originated with Escola, he has since passed the baton to some formidable actors, including Bowen Yang, Megan Stalter, Maya Rudolph and Jane Krakowski.
