Notes on refillable beauty, with ‘RUSSH’ and L’Oréal Luxe

world refill day

In partnership with L'Oréal

In light of World Refill Day and as part of our ongoing commitment to mindful consumption, RUSSH and L'Oréal Luxe joined forces last Friday to host a panel discussion on the importance of sustainability within beauty. The morning was hosted by RUSSH Beauty Editor Emily Algar, who facilitated an inspiring conversation between Dr Anita Vandyke, a rocket scientist, medical doctor and zero-waste living expert, as well as Laura Barroso, L'Oréal Groupe's Sustainability Manager across Australia and New Zealand.

The discussion spanned common beauty packaging materials and myths, recyclability, the disposal of 'empties' and packaging innovations, including refillable products. The L'Oréal Groupe is passionate about refillable beauty, especially in the context of luxury. Many hero formulas from its portfolio of brands are sold as refills, including the Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cream, Lancôme Génefique Ultimate Serum, YSL Rouge Pur Couture Lipstick and Giorgio Armani My Way perfume.

Guests arrived at Lunar Studios around 10 a.m. for coffee and breakfast pastries before taking their seats. Long-time readers were in attendance, alongside creative friends of RUSSH like Sarah Stephens, Ali Whittle, Martina Calvi and Talisa Sutton. The conversation was casual but informative, moving from practical take home advice and external resources, to editor-approved sustainable skincare, makeup and fragrance.

The morning finished with audience questions, before guests had time to chat, grab a final coffee and experience L'Oréal refills in real life. Everyone left with a curation of RUSSH editor favourite refillable beauty formulas, as well.

Sustainability within beauty is a topic we've long been passionate about at RUSSH. We believe in buying less and buying better, while supporting brands like L'Oréal who are putting time, energy and financial recourses into minimising not just their own environmental footprint, but that of the industry at large. It's not straightforward nor perfect, but it's essential that we're continuously moving in the right direction.
