If you, like us, are finding yourself increasingly drawn to the cinema these days – then you'll be excited to know that the slew of great films coming out right now has no intention of slowing at the end of this year. In fact, we'd argue 2025 is shaping up to be a year of some pretty stellar cinema. Whether you're looking for the sequel to a hit film or are banking on a new indie classic – these are 24 of the films being released in movie theatres in 2025 that we can't wait to feast our eyes upon...

 

1. 28 Years Later

Release date: 19 June 2025

Danny Boyle returns with the long-awaited sequel to 28 Days Later, this time with Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Jodie Comer navigating the bleak aftermath of a decades-old virus.

 

2. The Phoenician Scheme

Release date: 29 May 2025

Wes Anderson turns his signature symmetry to a 1950s-style fantasy thriller, with Benicio Del Toro scheming for power in a fictional Middle Eastern realm – and a dazzling ensemble backing it. Fresh from its Cannes premiere, we're excited to see Anderson back on business.

 

3. Sinners

Release date: 17 April 2025

It's about time we had another sexy vampire film in theatres, and Sinners from Ryan Coogler delivers on all fronts. Starring Michael B. Jordan (twice), this one is a blood-soaked descent into desire, duplicity, and eternal damnation; the kind of slow-burn sensuality that only a Coogler–Jordan reunion could summon.

 

4. Bring Her Back

Release date: 29 May 2025

This Australian horror thriller, directed by the same Philippou brothers behind Talk to Me, stars Oscar-nominee Sally Hawkins in an unnerving turn as a grieving foster mother who gets tangled in occult rituals. It's got visceral scares and strong character work that horror fans are calling one of the most unsettling releases of the year.

 

5. It Was Just An Accident

Release date: TBC

Filmed between Iran, France, and Luxembourg, this thriller film written and directed by Jafar Panahi just won the Palme d'Or. A late-night detour to a roadside repair shop sets off a chain of haunting memories and moral reckoning.

 

6. Eddington

Release date: 21 August 2025

Pedro Pascal, Joaquin Phoenix, Emma Stone and Austin Butler star in this neo-Western black comedy by Ari Aster. Set during the COVID-19 pandemic, a small-town sheriff and mayor standoff as neighbour is pitted against neighbour in Eddington, N.M.

 

7. I Know What You Did Last Summer

Release date: 17 July 2025

A remake of the cult classic film from 1997. This new adaptation filmed in Australia stars Madelyn Cline, Chase Sui Wonders and Gabbriette as a group of friends is terrorised by a stalker who knows about a gruesome secret from their past.

 

8. Warfare

Release date: 17 April 2025

Alex Garland's war film was based on co-writer Ray Mendoza's experiences during the Iraq War as a U.S. Navy SEAL. Starring plenty of the internet's favourite men – Will Poulter, Kit Connor, Joseph Quinn and Charles Melton – as a platoon of American Navy SEALs in insurgent territory in Iraq.

 

9. Black Bag

Release date: 13 March 2025

George Woodhouse has spent his life serving his country — but when his wife Kathryn is accused of treason, the line between duty and devotion begins to blur. Starring Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender.

 

10. The Materialists

Release date: 12 June 2025

Celine Song's take on the modern rom-com subverts the genre for a 2025 audience. Starring Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans, the film follows a young New York City matchmaker as she finds herself torn between the perfect match and her imperfect ex.

 

11. The Mastermind

Release date: TBC

Josh O'Connor and Alana Haim star in this 70s heist film as an unemployed carpenter plans a broad daylight heist to steal four paintings.

 

12. Hurry Up Tomorrow

Release date: 16 May 2025

The Weeknd's first foray into film follows a musician plagued by insomnia, who gets pulled into a nightmarish odyssey with a stranger who begins to unravel the very core of his existence. Starring Abel himself, Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan.

 

13. Death of a Unicorn

Release date: 10 April 2025

Another Ortega film we're excited for is A24's Death of a Unicorn. When a weekend retreat turns deadly during a hit-and-run, a motley crew of characters seek to exploit the creature's miraculous curative properties.

 

14. Wicked: For Good

Release date: 21 November 2025

Wicked fans won't have to wait much longer for the musical-turned-film's follow up. Glinda, Elphaba and plenty of the film's beloved characters return for the film, where a now-demonised Elphaba lives in exile.

 

15. Frankenstein

Release date: November 2025

No one does a monster movie like Guillermo del Toro, and is there a monster more famed than Frankenstein's? We've had plenty of riffs on Shelley's story lately – from Poor Things to  Lisa Frankenstein – but now we're finally getting a remake of the real deal. The cast is stellar – Oscar Isaacs, Mia Goth and Christoph Waltz. But we're more interested in seeing Jacob Elordi as the monster.

 

16. Ocean with David Attenborough

Release date: 8 May 2025

The icon that is Attenborough returns to the silver screen, this time exploring undersea habitats and emphasising opportunities for marine life recovery.

 

17. Avatar: Fire and Ash

Release date: 18 December 2025

Sue us if we love a bit of James Cameron blue warrior action. The third instalment of the billion dollar Avatar series will be making its way to our screens in 2025 and we will be parking ourselves in a reclining chair at our nearest IMAX for the occasion.

 

18. Mickey 17

Release date: 6 March 2025

Bong Joon Ho's new flick Mickey 17 stars none other than Robert Pattinson of all people. If you know anything about Ho's filmography, this will probably be an existential dystopian nightmare with a side of dry humour and plenty of celebrity appearances.

 

19. 'Oh, Hi!'

Release date: 25 July 2025

Logan Lerman and The Bear's Molly Gordon are prepped to star in this indie comedy from filmmaker Sophie Brooks as a couple on their first romantic weekend getaway, which goes awry in a most unexpected way.

 

20. Freakier Friday

Release date: 7 August 2025

Purely for the Disney nostalgia, the comeback of Lindsay Lohan, and for the love of Jamie-lee Curtis for a sequel to Freaky Friday will be a must-watch for us this year.

 

21. Bugonia

Release date: 7 November 2025

Yorgos may have released two films in 2024, but that hasn't stopped him from announcing yet another for 2025 called Bugonia. While not much has been said about the film so far, we do know the plot will centre on two conspiracy-obsessed men who kidnap the CEO of a major company, convinced she's an alien who wants to destroy Earth. No surprises here – it will star Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons.

 

22. The Long Walk

Release date: 11 September 2025

This film adaptation of Stephen King's 1979 sci-fi horror novel of the same name is set in a dystopian future where 100 teenage boys are forced to participate in a brutal annual competition. It's set to feature Industry star David Jonsson alongside Mark Hamill, Cooper Hoffmann and Judy Greer.

 

23. Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery

Release date: 12 December 2025

If you love a good-old-fashioned murder mystery then you've probably been keeping track of Netflix's Knives Out series over the last few years. While 2022 gave us Glass Onion, 2025 is slated to give us Wake Up Dead Man, starring none other than Challengers' Josh O'Connor our beloved hot priest, Andrew Scott, ands Priscilla and Alien: Romulus star Cailee Spaeny.

 

24. Flesh of the Gods

Release date: TBC

Starring Kristen Stewart and Oscar Isaac, this thriller film sees a married couple in 1980s Los Angeles leave behind luxury for nightly adventures with a nameless and hedonistic group.
