As we emerge from the bleak mid–winter and there are tentative moments of sun, it’s time to bring some joy and music back into our lives.
Those who have been paying attention will have noticed the RUSSH Editors sharing our top 5 Australian songs but, for me that was just too few, so you’ll find in our playlist some iconic Australian tracks that deserve more love and appreciation. There has been some fantastic new music coming at us all throughout the year, so for your audio and visual pleasure I’m sharing them below, alongside my wider playlist for July.
Whilst our Kylie is in there, I hope you find some smaller artists that have as big an impact as the stadium headliners. In an industry that is making it harder and harder for artists to survive, if you find something you love, show it.
A Life Of Crime by The Triffids
Starting with a classic and it should have been in my top five. The whole album is impeccable but this is seductive romance at its finest and a forever favourite.
I Don’t Wanna Go Out by X
Iconic Australian Punk for the misanthropes and the reclusive.
Grown Ups by Pulp
Yes, I know, Oasis are touring. But Pulp will always have my heart and are actively creating stunning new music rather than resting on their laurels.
Is It Worth It (Happy Birthday)? by Cate Le Bon
There are many Le Bons in music but surely Cate is the coolest? Though she pays homage with her stage name to Simon Le Bon of Duran Duran, there is something different and deeply special about the new music she is creating.
Love on the Big Screen by Animal Collective
Animal Collective have always done their own and often odd thing for years now, and since falling in love with their song The Purple Bottle they continue to come in and out of my regular rotation.
Smile Hearse Driver by Ryder The Eagle
The Eagle continues to fly with a beautiful and darkly humorous song with an incredible video made by ultimate RUSSH girl, Eloïse Labarbe-Lafon.
Missing feat. Sharon van Etten by Jack Ladder
No surprises that two of my favourite artists coming together on a Sydney ferry has me captivated. The song is a classic in the making and the director’s choice of yellow socks is a particularly perfect detail.
The Field by Blood Orange
Dev and The Durritti Column? A pairing of note and intrigued to hear more
Bed Knot by Solo Career
Cool new single and visually has me questioning why more furniture isn’t made of biscuits?
Emotional Technology by Karl Frog
This is the good stuff.
Light Me Up by Cid Rim
When I first heard some of the Cid Rim evocative of Radiohead, I did not expect this nor the orange tracksuit, but sure, let’s do it.
Fated To Pretend by Daily Toll
I love this band and this sound, funny and low-fi with a generous dose of witty cynicism. I hope they do steal the Maserati.
SVU by Bridge Dog
Excellent. I will be very keen to see them live.
Check out the wider playlist here for new music from 3%, John Maus, Automatic, Baxter Dury, and TTSSFU.
