Am I going to be that person and act astounded that we are already approaching the end of February ? Yes, I am. But I do feel that it is a truth universally acknowledged that we are all wanting more time this year – especially more time to listen to music. And to catch up on last year’s music, the year, decade prior ad infinitum…
There has been lots happening with new releases from Lykke Li, Bic Runga, Miss Kaninna and a RUSSH forever favourite Kim Gordon, please delve through the highlights below and fall in love with some old favourites and some soon-to-be-favourites from Flesh Cherub, Parissa Tossif or Nightdogs.
Always With Me by TEED
The titular track from the 3rd record, TEED, released a record made on just one synth for clarity, and record showcases what one man and his synth can do.
Mysterious (دریا) by Parissa Tosif
Mysterious (دریا) is the most contemporary leaning of Parissa Tosif’s singles, placing traditionally recorded Iranian instrumentation (like the daf and tombak and oud), against driving electronic production. It’s deep and magical, leaving us very excited for the debut album to be delivered in full.
Lucky Again by Lykke Li
Welcome back, Lykke Li, we’ve missed you. As charming as ever, no doubt fans will be "a little bit in love" with it already.
Dirty Tech by Kim Gordon
I will happy listen to Gordon talk Dirty Tech to me, another track teasing us for the upcoming album Play Me.
Undercurrent (Clean Heart) by Perfume Genius
Just beautiful.
God’s Lonely Man by Anna Calvi feat. Iggy Pop
I would class this as 'cool night time music'. I love a duet, especially one with Iggy Pop.
Lights Burn Dimmer by Fred again.. and Jamie T
An unexpected collaboration for those who remember Jamie T for Sheila some 16 years ago but hey, it works.
Relax, Relapse by Flesh Cherub
There is some kind of haunting beauty emulating from this cherub’s voice. I’m very intrigued by this project and can’t wait for the next release. This is a song that gradually hypnotised me until the crescendo, when we have the drums kick in around three minutes in and you drift off until the conclusion.
Flags by Damon Alburn, Grian Chatten and Kate Tempest
Taken from HELP(2) the forthcoming album from War Child Records, out 6 March, beautiful music for a more beautiful cause. Fun fact, the choir features Johnny Marr and Jarvis Cocker.
MOB TIES by Miss Kaninna
Blak Britney season continues to reign supreme.
STAMPEDE by Genesis Owusu
Owusu is back with lots of bikes. On the single, Owusu has said: "Left side to the right side, front side to the back. We’re all in the shit together, my loves. Docile and languid for what? Shake the fucking ground. Be heeded and not herded. Scream to make the world a better place". Noted.
Nights are Lonely by Raindogs
Strong hints of Vega in this dark wave dark night dark driving song with dark guitar solo.
Daisies by Cooee
My favourite from their debut record Messengers, Kirli Saunders – alongside Mark Harding – adds another string to her creative bow with her unique voice.
Paris in the Rain by Bic Runga
Another favourite from a fresh album from Runga’s new album Red Sunset.
