I’m not going to lie, it’s been a very varied month of listening for me. Spring sprung which ignited a listening frenzy of light and dreamlike music and then we were cruelly plunged into darkness once more. It’s sort of like that Nick Cave quote, "I can control the weather with my moods, I just can't control my moods," but inverted.
For the more lighthearted spring-like psychedelia, obviously there is new music from Tame Impala, but Melody’s Echo chamber are also back, along with a new Big Thief record that has a fresh joy and lightness. Although not new, I fell in love with Lali Puna in one of my more introspective moments and the new Jack Ladder makes anthemic misery. I had to share with you Normal Brain – M U S I C, which I discovered and is a hypnotic Kraftwerk-esque hit. Lastly, I highly recommend checking out Georgia Mulligan, there is some magic undulating there…
Fast Forward by Lali Puna
I heard this on the radio and fell in love. I wish I had known about it 10 years ago. I am a sucker for spoken verse against a drum machine and synth base.
Greasy off the Racing Line by Daniel Avery with Allison Mosshart
This sort of reminds me of Bjork’s ‘Army of Me’ in a more dystopian, less 90’s way. Mosshart has a habit of perfecting the nonchalant cool girl vocals. Naturally, this is not a sunny song…
Words by Big Thief
From their new record, Double Infinity, Words is a beautiful song that showcases the artful songwriting of the band.
Mowing by Herbert and Momoko
I’m a little late to the party on this one but I found this rhythmically hypnotic.
Daisy by Melody’s Echo Chamber
This is what you would expect from Melody’s Echo Chamber, retro and dreamy, this song is in full bloom.
M U S I C by Normal Brain
As mentioned, this is just fun.
Ibiza by Way Dynamic
This is fun, I love a cowbell from the get go. There is something evocative of David Bryne in this vocally and in tone, a solid groove to see us into spring that retains a little post punk darkness.
New Earth Time by Soulwax
I love so many of the Soulwax remixes and their production work, (looking at you Marie Davidson), so it's very exciting that there is new music on the way from the DEEWEE pair.
EVERYTHING BELONGS 2 U by Jack Ladder
A timeless ode to your former lover who steals everything.. From the forthcoming album, Separation Rock, 'EVERYTHING BELONGS 2 U' is another purring ballad from our favourite baritone. Never has there been a more cinematic nosebleed outro.
Feel It Change by Stella Donnelly
New music and a new album coming soon, cute! A lovely guitar tone and dreamy backing vocals unifying this single.
Split by Georgia Mulligan
I am most definitely keeping tabs on this artist. Mulligan’s lyricism swings between the beautiful and absurd and 'Split' delivers real restraint allowing the chorus to hit hard.
Don’t Call My Name by Milly Strange
A dark bluesy number coming out of Naarm.
Thirst Trap by Audrey Hobert
Read our RUSSH interview with Audrey for more Hobert intel. We’ve all changed the lighting…
Wish I Did by Milly McPherson
There is some real sweetness in this song.
imanocean by Purity Ring
Purity ring are back with some some fragile vocals by the ocean.
