There might still be hope for Mindhunter fans. The critically acclaimed but short-lived Netflix series could return – not as a third season, but as a trilogy of feature-length films. Actor Holt McCallany, who played FBI agent Bill Tench in the show, recently confirmed that director David Fincher is exploring the idea. And even that is enough for us to get excited about.
What do we know so far?
In a recent interview, McCallany shared that he met with Fincher a few months ago to discuss the future of the series. “David said there’s a chance it could come back as three two-hour movies,” McCallany revealed. “Writers are already working on scripts, but nothing will move forward unless David is happy with them.”
Known for his precision and perfectionism, Fincher isn’t quick to greenlight projects without full creative confidence. McCallany added that he once worked on a separate script with Fincher for over two years, during which the director provided extensive feedback. “He’s extremely meticulous – which is why he’s so respected,” he said.
Mindhunter originally aired in 2017 and ran for two seasons before being put on an indefinite hold in 2019. The series followed the development of the FBI’s Behavioral Science Unit and introduced audiences to the process of criminal profiling. It was based on the non-fiction book Mindhunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit by John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker, and also starred Jonathan Groff as Holden Ford.
Despite widespread praise, Netflix did not renew the series after its second season, reportedly due to high production costs and Fincher’s other commitments.
When would the films be released?
As of now, there is no confirmed release date. McCallany stressed that the project is still in very early stages and heavily dependent on Fincher’s satisfaction with the scripts. “The sun, the moon and the stars would all have to align,” he said.
For now, the potential Mindhunter movies remain just a promising possibility.
