Mia Wasikowska is directing an ABC legal drama, ‘The Great White’

Mia Wasikowska

We're already well-acquainted with Mia Wasikowska's on-screen talents. But now, the Australian actress is shifting her focus to behind the camera, helming a legal drama for ABC Australia, titled The Great White.

While you might be most familiar with Wasikowska's star-making turns in hits like All Saints, Alice In Wonderland, and Jane Eyre – or perhaps as the face of Prada's first dual fragrance release, and a frequent fixture in the front row at Louis Vuitton – it's actually not the first time Wasikowska has worked behind the scenes. She's previously contributed to anthology films The Turning, and Madly, and this year is the artist-in-residence at the Australian Film Television and Radio School.

So, what will her foray into to series direction look like? Below, everything you need to know about her latest accolade, The Great White.

What is The Great White about?

Exact details are yet to be revealed, but the plot is loosely described by Variety as the story of "a brilliant but disgraced lawyer who’s forced to represent a dog on death row, setting him on an unexpected path toward redemption and self-discovery."

Given it's being billed as a little offbeat, we're hoping the series might take its cues from other Australian legal series like the hilarious Rake, and Kitty Flanagan's more recent hit, Fisk.

Who else is involved?

Wasikowska has assembled some serious talent for the project. Leading the cast as the lawyer is Hugo Weaving, whose expansive CV includes everything from The Matrix to The Lord of the Rings.

Nash Edgerton will serve as co-director alongside Wasikowska, while Ange Betzien (who gave us Apple Cider Vinegar) and Nick Coyle (the brains behind Bump) are co-writers.

Excitingly, the series is being produced by See-Saw Films, the mega production company behind hits like Slow Horses, The Kings Speech, and Justin Kurzels' Macbeth.

When will it be released?

There's no release date as of yet. We'll keep you updated as we know more.
