The Met Gala has long been fashion's most anticipated night, but the 2027 edition is already shaping up to be one of its most significant in years.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art has announced that its spring Costume Institute exhibition will be dedicated to British designer John Galliano, marking only the fourth time a living designer has received a solo retrospective at the museum.
Following exhibitions honouring Yves Saint Laurent in 1983, Rei Kawakubo in 2017, and Karl Lagerfeld in 2023, John Galliano: Horizons promises to explore the designer's extraordinary creative legacy alongside the complexities that have defined his career.
What is the 2027 Met Gala theme?
The exhibition, titled John Galliano: Horizons, will celebrate more than four decades of Galliano's work, tracing his career from his breakthrough 1984 Central Saint Martins graduate collection through his transformative tenures at Givenchy, Christian Dior, his own namesake label and, most recently, Maison Margiela.
Curated by Andrew Bolton, the exhibition examines the way Galliano constructs fashion through history, storytelling and emotion. Rather than following a straightforward chronology, Horizons explores the designer's recurring fascinations with memory, theatre, craftsmanship and transformation, revealing how seemingly unrelated references become some of fashion's most memorable collections.

Why is John Galliano's exhibition so significant?
The announcement marks a remarkable milestone in Galliano's career. Once celebrated as one of fashion's greatest visionaries, the designer was dismissed from Dior in 2011 following antisemitic remarks made in Paris, a moment that led to years away from the industry while he underwent rehabilitation.
His stint at Maison Margiela ultimately reshaped that narrative, culminating in the widely acclaimed Spring 2024 Artisanal collection, regarded by many as one of the defining couture shows of the decade. The exhibition acknowledges both Galliano's unparalleled creative influence and the realities of his personal history, presenting the full arc of his career rather than separating the brilliance from its consequences.

What can we expect from the dress code?
The official Met Gala dress code is still to be revealed, but fashion lovers can expect guests to embrace Galliano's unmistakable world of dramatic silhouettes, historical references, theatrical couture, lavish embellishment and transformative storytelling. If the exhibition itself is any indication, the 2027 Met Gala red carpet could become one of the most imaginative in recent memory.

When will the Met Gala 2027 be?
While the Metropolitan Museum of Art is yet to formally announce the date, the Met Gala traditionally takes place on the first Monday in May. In 2027, that falls on 3 May 2027, when fashion's biggest names will gather to celebrate the opening of the Costume Institute's latest exhibition.
