A quick Q&A with Sebastian Professional’s Head of Global Artistry, Shay Dempsey
1. As Head of Global Artistry, how would you describe the creative direction of the brand today?
Sebastian is focused on celebrating both the hairstylist and the consumer, placing their individuality at the forefront. There are so many different types of hair artists, some specialising in colour, others in cutting, and then the more editorial, next‑level creatives who aren’t afraid to make mistakes in pursuit of a creative end goal. I also believe our customers share this mindset, and Sebastian is about challenging and inspiring both. We are always looking to the next generation of raw talent, building on our incredible community of like‑minded individuals.
2. Part of the brand’s mission statement is: ‘We don’t teach, we provoke’. How do you continue to evolve the brand’s rebellious spirit?
Fearless is word I like to use as Sebastian is not afraid of pushing the boundaries. This comes to life through our imagery, our innovation in product development and in how we truly allow you to really play with hair and transform it in a very unique way. Cocktailing products together to change the fabric of the hair to create new textures or layering multiple products to build more volume and shine. Sebastian gives such a freedom to be creative.
3. How has your own practice as an award-winning hairstylist inspired product innovation?
Products are my liquid tools. Much like an artist, you need to prepare the canvas before the creative process begins, and then it is more about choosing the right product to help you achieve your end goal. I have the eyes and the hands, but I’m always looking for that next killer product.
4. What is your most reached-for product from Sebastian Professional right now?
When I cut hair, I’m always layering No Breaker Bond-building & Styling Spray and Dark Oil Smooth & Shine Styling Oil through the hair, those two deliver beautiful slip and incredible control. Potion 9 Leave-in Conditioner & Styling Cream is a true hero product for me. It’s so versatile and can be used in so many ways. I love it. And of course, on set it’s Re-Shaper Stronghold Hairspray and Mousse Forte, I can’t live without them.
5. In a world increasingly influenced by social media and fast-moving trends, what do you believe defines true, lasting artistry in hair today?
When I watch a true professional on social media transform someone’s hairstyle to complement their face and lifestyle in such an educational and artistic way, it really makes me so happy. Sometimes less is more, it’s always about the craft.
