There's a new love triangle to fill the Challengers-shaped hole in our hearts, and it's between none other than Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal, and Chris Evans. Introducing Materialists, the latest film courtesy of A24 which, if the trailer is anything to go by, perfectly straddles the line between classic 2000s rom-com and indie arthouse.

It's not the first love triangle Johnson is set to find herself in on screens this year. The actress is currently filming the adaptation of Colleen Hoover's Verity — a slightly darker tale than Materialists, in which she plays an out of work writer who is hired to complete a famous author's latest novel, after she suffers a terrible accident. Needless to say, an unusual romance ensues...

But if a love triangle wasn't enough to get you interested, perhaps this will be: Materialists is the follow up work of Past Lives director Celine Song. ICYMI, Past Lives earned two Academy Award nominations for its heartbreakingly real tale of two childhood friends (played by Greta Lee and Teo Yoo) over the course of 24 years. What is Materialists about?

As you might have gathered from the trailer, Materialists follows a successful matchmaker (Dakota Johnson), who finds herself caught in the ultimate dilemma: choosing between her perfect match and her less-than-perfect ex boyfriend.

While we haven't seen more than the above two-minute snippet, from the plot down to the score, the film is already brimming with the kind of easy nostalgia we remember from the golden era of 2000s rom coms. Sign us up.

Who else is involved in Materialists?

Behind the scenes, Materialists sees Song reunite with producer David Jinojosa, who she worked with on Past Lives, as well as Christine Vachon and Pamela Koffler from Killer Films.

Besides the leading trio, there's no word yet on whether there's any familiar faces in the ensemble cast, but we'll certainly be watching closely for updates.

When does Materialists come out?

Quite soon, actually. The film is slated for release on June 13, 2025.
