We should have known when Sofia Coppola announced her debut documentary, Marc By Sofia, that it would be more than just a film. As the visionary director turns her lens towards friend and designer Marc Jacobs, she's staying true to tradition, and extending the project beyond the screen with a companion book published by A24.

Like so many of her other projects, the book is an extension of Coppola’s immaculate visual language. Here's what we know so far.

What’s it about?

While we haven't got the book in our hot little hands (yet), we already have a good idea of what to expect. Rather than a linear retelling of Marc Jacobs’ career, the book is a visual archive, reflecting both Coppola’s signature creativity and Jacobs’ most influential fashion moments.

The official synopsis reads: "When Sofia Coppola first met Marc Jacobs over two decades ago, they became fast friends and frequent collaborators. In this companion book to Coppola's new documentary, Marc by Sofia, the filmmaker offers her own portrait of Jacobs’ life and work in fashion—from his Parsons school days to his grunge collection for Perry Ellis, the mark he made on Louis Vuitton, the birth of his own label, and the moments leading up to his 2024 runway show.

Featuring conversations between Jacobs and Coppola, as well as hundreds of personal photographs and behind-the-scenes materials from Jacobs’ studio."

In keeping with Coppola’s broader body of work, actual text will likely be minimal, with captions, notes, perhaps small reflections alongside the imagery. In other words, these are pages you pore over rather than read.

When is it available?

The book is now available for pre-order, and expected to ship in May.
