After a brief detour to the Marvel trenches with Sgt. Rock (which has now been pushed to 2026), Luca Guadagnino is already pivoting to a new – and very now – project. The acclaimed director is in talks to helm Artificial at Amazon MGM Studios, a sharp-turn departure from his romantic and psychological fare into the world of Silicon Valley boardrooms, algorithmic ego, and one very public corporate soap opera. In the hands of Guadagnino, who can turn tennis into a psychological thriller (Challengers, anyone?), the corporate chaos of OpenAI might just become the next great cinematic obsession. Here's everything we know so far.
What will it be about?
Artificial is set to centre around the explosive saga that unfolded at OpenAI in late 2023 – yes, that OpenAI who created ChatGPT. If you were even half-paying attention to the tech world at the time, you’ll remember it: CEO Sam Altman was unceremoniously fired by his own board, only to be swiftly reinstated days later following internal mutiny, internet panic, and a parade of corporate loyalty statements. The script, written by Saturday Night Live alum Simon Rich, promises to bring both the absurdity and high-stakes chaos of that moment to life.
Who's in the cast?
Though the project is technically still in development, casting is already heating up. Andrew Garfield, Monica Barbaro, and Anora breakout Yura Borisov are all in early talks to lead the ensemble. Garfield is quickly becoming something of a Guadagnino regular, starring in the director’s After the Hunt (opposite Julia Roberts and Ayo Edebiri), which drops this October.
There’s serious pedigree behind the camera too. The film will be produced by David Heyman – the mind behind the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts franchises – alongside Jeffrey Clifford. Jennifer Fox is also circling the producer lineup.
When will it be released?
While the deals are still being inked, the hope is to shoot the film later this year. If that timing holds, we might see Artificial on screens as early as 2026.
