After a brief detour to the Marvel trenches with Sgt. Rock (which has now been pushed to 2026), Luca Guadagnino is already pivoting to a new – and very now – project. The acclaimed director is helming Artificial at Amazon MGM Studios, a sharp-turn departure from his romantic and psychological fare into the world of AI — specifically, OpenAI, the parent company of ChatGPT. In the hands of Guadagnino, who can turn tennis into a psychological thriller (Challengers, anyone?), corporate chaos might just become the next great cinematic obsession. Here's everything we know so far.
Who's in the cast?
The latest addition to the call sheet is Girls star Zosia Mamet – perhaps better known in your brain as Shoshana. At this point, there's no word yet on the role she’ll be playing.
Mamet joins last week's casting announcement of Billie Lourd, and a roster that includes Monica Barbaro, Jason Schwartzman, Cooper Hoffman and Ike Barinholtz. Also on board is Monsters talent, Cooper Koch, and Anora breakout Yura Borisov, who somehow managed to pull heartstrings playing a Russian henchman (which also marked his first english-speaking role).
Barbaro will be playing opposite her real-life partner Andrew Garfield – the film's star – who is s quickly becoming something of a Guadagnino regular (you'll also catch him starring in the director’s After the Hunt opposite Julia Roberts and Ayo Edebiri in October).
There’s serious pedigree behind the camera too. The film will be produced by David Heyman – the mind behind the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts franchises – alongside Jeffrey Clifford. Jennifer Fox is also circling the producer lineup.
What will it be about?
Artificial is set to centre around the explosive saga that unfolded at OpenAI in late 2023 – yes, that OpenAI who created ChatGPT. If you were even half-paying attention to the tech world at the time, you’ll remember it: CEO Sam Altman was unceremoniously fired by his own board, only to be swiftly reinstated days later following internal mutiny, internet panic, and a parade of corporate loyalty statements. The script, written by Saturday Night Live alum Simon Rich, promises to bring both the absurdity and high-stakes chaos of that moment to life.
Jonathan Anderson is the costume designer
All feels right again knowing our favourite duo, Guadagnino and newly-minted Dior creative director Jonathan Anderson, will be working together for the third time on a film. Having previously collabed on Queer and Challengers, we already know this pairing is the stuff of dreams. The question is will we be seeing custom Dior by Jonathan Anderson in this project?
When will it be released?
While the deals are still being inked, the hope is to shoot the film later this year. If that timing holds, we might see Artificial on screens as early as 2026.
