PSA Y2K rom-com lovers: ’27 Dresses’ might be getting a sequel

It’s been over 15 years since 27 Dresses first graced our screens, giving us Katherine Heigl as the perpetually accommodating, hopelessly romantic Jane – a woman who’s been a bridesmaid 27 times and counting. And in that decade and a half, it has entered the annals of rom-com classics like How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days or 10 Things I Hate About You or 50 First Dates (or other Y2K rom-com hits with numbers in their titles?)

But now, fans of the iconic rom-com might finally get their wish: a sequel could be in the works. Here's everything we know so far about a 27 Dresses sequel.

What's been confirmed?

In a recent interview, Heigl revealed there have been serious discussions about reviving the film. “I think we’re in talks about a 27 Dresses sequel,” she shared, adding that she’d gladly make time for the project – even if it meant compromising a bit on her duties as a mother of three. But there’s a catch. “It would have to be done right,” she said. “You don’t want to diminish the first one… you want to add to it.”

Who is in the cast?

While no official sequel has been confirmed, Heigl’s update offers a hopeful glimmer, and suggest that the team behind the original film could be returning – prioritising nostalgia while aiming to bring something fresh. And she’s not alone in her enthusiasm. James Marsden, who starred as Jane’s eventual love interest Kevin, has also expressed interest in reprising his role, telling fans last year to “bring it on.”

What is 27 Dresses about?

Always the bridesmaid but never the bride, the original film follows Jane (played by Heigl), who is a hopeless romantic thriving on helping others plan their big day – until her own love life starts to unravel in unexpected ways. When a charming journalist enters the picture, she's forced to confront what she really wants, both in love and in life.

Since its release in 2008, 27 Dresses has become a cult favourite among romantic comedy lovers, in part due to its mix of sharp humour, romantic tension, and heart. Directed by Anne Fletcher and written by Aline Brosh McKenna, the film featured a stellar supporting cast including Judy Greer, Malin Akerman, Krysten Ritter, and Edward Burns.
