Actress Kathryn Newton is stepping into the world of romance, and bringing to life one of BookTok's favourite novels in the process. The actress is set not only to star, but also produce Just One Day, a new series for Amazon based on Gayle Forman’s bestselling YA novels of the same name.
For those unfamiliar, Just One Day (and its companion novel Just One Year) are something of a cult classic in the teen-lit-to-early-adult pipeline — the kind of books that once lived permanently in your beach bag or bedside table. First published in 2013, news of the series will delight both a now-older audience who fell in love with Forman's work in their teenage years, while also putting the story on the map for a whole new generation. Below, everything you need to know about the Just One Day adaptation.
What is Just One Day about?
Newton will play Allyson 'Lulu' Healey, a rule-following American teen on a post-graduation tour through Europe, who meets Willem — a Dutch actor with a penchant for Shakespeare and spontaneous detours. He invites her to Paris for, you guessed it, just one day. She says yes. Chaos, connection, and heartbreak ensue.
What follows is less a love story and more a slow-burning odyssey about identity, serendipity, and the kind of life-shifting intimacy that can occur over 24 hours. Just One Year flips the lens, tracing Willem’s side of the story — we can only hope that a later season will bring this version of events to the silver screen.
The source material, which has sold nearly one million copies worldwide and been translated into 19 languages, is rich with emotional depth and cinematic potential. Think: moody European streets, sun-drenched train rides, and introspective voiceovers. In other words, perfect fodder for the kind of romance series we'll be thinking about long after it's over.
Who else is involved?
So far, Newton is the only actor confirmed for the project. Exactly who will star opposite as Willem remains to be scene.
Behind the scenes, the project is in good hands with Beauty and the Beast creatives Sherri Cooper and Jennifer Levin adapting the series. It’s being developed under Amazon’s first-look deal with PKM Productions’ Patrick Moran and Lynley Bird, with Forman herself and director Anna Mastro also attached to produce.
When will the Just One Day adaptation come out?
There’s no release date just yet, but consider this one firmly on our radar. We'll keep you updated as we know more.
