Jonathan Van Ness on the healing power of baths and the best serum for sensitive skin

Here we have none other than Jonathan Van Ness' beauty routine. You know who he is. Because from the instant he graced our screens on Netflix’s Queer Eye he won over our hearts. His kind-hearted nature, infectious excitement and tender vulnerability is like few we had seen before.

As the resident hair stylist and grooming expert on Queer Eye, and ambassador for Biossance who better to take beauty advice from than Van Ness himself? Therefore, we went straight to the source. Our favourite person to follow on Instagram shares his favourite skincare, dealing with psoriasis and why his beauty icon will forever be his grandma.

What is your morning beauty routine?

Because of my sensitive skin I try not to add drastic new things to my routine, so as to not upset the balance. Each morning I cleanse. I always follow that up with the Biossance Squalane + Marine Algae Eye Cream and I alternate between Algenist serum and the Biossance Squalane + Phyto-Retinol Serum. I then use the Biossance Squalane + Omega Repair Cream all over, followed up by Biossance Squalane + Vitamin C Rose Oil. Then I apply my Algenist blurring primer, and add concealer on spots where necessary, ending with sunscreen of course.

What is your night beauty routine?

My night routine is the same for cleansing, eye cream, then I love to add the Biossance Squalane + 10% Lactic Acid Resurfacing Night SerumBiossance Squalane + Omega Repair Cream.

Describe what you do for a living? What does a typical day look like for you?

One of my favourite things about my job is that it really looks forever different. I get more into a consistent schedule if I’m shooting the show, but many times, it varies a lot if I’m touring or between jobs. Everyday has some form of working out to clear my head and get my day going.

What is the supermarket/ drug store/ chemist beauty product(s) that you use and love?

It’s not my daily moisturiser, but if I’m having a psoriasis flare up which requires topical medication, Cetaphil body moisturiser allows my skin to stay moisturised and not to dry from my medication.

What is your main form of beauty body maintenance? What products do you use on your body?

My main body product if I’m not flared up from psoriasis, even if I do have a flare up, I use 100% Squalane oil on my damp skin in the shower to let it soak in.

How do you keep fit/ healthy? Does exercise form a large part of your routine?

Gymnastics! It’s been really fun to return to something I loved in high school. Doing it onstage has been un-expected but I love it.

What cosmetic procedures/ professional treatments do you have as part of your beauty routine?

Massages and facials are the only things I’ve done so far, and hopefully it’ll stay that way.

What do you do when your body needs to recover?

I love to take baths and lay with my cats on the couch, a good massage also always helps.

You’re tired/ hungover/ rundown: what is your beauty hack?

Slow down! Some face masks, bath, and a good workout.

What is the one non-negotiable in your beauty routine?

The non-negotiable in my beauty routine is sleep. If I don’t have at least 7-8 hours of sleep I really can’t do my job well so that’s important.

Do you have a beauty icon? Who are they and why?

My beauty icon was my grandma. She got more and more beautiful as she got older and she always practiced a moderate approach to everything, I look up to that.
