What happens when you take a fragrance born from one coastline and place it on another?

For RUSSH Beauty Annual issue 3.0, we considered this question through image rather than scent alone. Jo Malone London’s Sea Salt & Bergamot was handed over to the imagination of a photographer and collage artist Kitty Callaghan, who transplanted the fragrance from the wild waters of the Celtic Sea into the Australian landscape.

The result is something both familiar and strange. Sea Salt & Bergamot was created around the sensation of being immersed in the British coast: bergamot breaking brightly at the surface, sea salt bringing fresh minerality, and driftwood grounding the fragrance beneath it. But removed from its original geography, those notes begin to speak a slightly different language.

Against the vastness of the Australian landscape, salt becomes sun-bleached and elemental. Driftwood feels sculptural; bergamot, almost like a flash of light. Through collage, scale and geography become fluid – a bottle can loom over a coastline, sit impossibly within the landscape, or become part of the terrain itself.

It’s an idea that feels particularly at home within Beauty Annual Edition 3, where beauty is considered not simply as product, but as image, object and creative proposition. Here, fragrance becomes another material for interpretation.

Jo Malone London describes Sea Salt & Bergamot as being “immersed in the wild waters”, in contrast to Wood Sage & Sea Salt’s windswept shore. In our imagining, those waters have travelled.

From the Celtic Sea to the Australian coast, the landscape changes. The sensation – salt on skin, mineral air, the exhilaration of open water – somehow remains.
