Our gothic novel obsession continues, with Aimee Lou Wood starring in a ‘Jane Eyre’ adaptation

Jane Eyre

It seems if there's one thing Hollywood can't resist, it's a period adaptation. And while we've been firmly focused on the work of Emily Brontë thanks to Emerald Fennell's Wuthering Heights, it's time to shift our attention to her sister, Charlotte. Yep, Jane Eyre is set to receive the 2026 television treatment, filled with all the yearning, gothic romance, and female agency that made it a hit way back in 1847. Here's what you need to know.

Who is involved?

Fresh off a star-making turn on The White Lotus, Aimee Lou Wood is stepping into the titular role of Jane, the fiercely intelligent, defiant heroine who refuses to bend to the expectations of class, gender or circumstance.

There's no further casting news as of yet, but we'll be keeping a close eye on which actor lands roles like Edward Rochester, Mrs Reed, and Helen Burns.

Behind the scenes, the project is being developed by British production heavyweight Working Title Films, the studio behind everything from Love Actually and the Bridget Jones's Diary franchise to Pride & Prejudice and Emma. And the script is being penned by Miriam Battye, a writer known for her work on Succession, which suggests this version of Jane Eyre may lean into the psychological sharpness and class tension beyond just romance.

What is it about?

First published in 1847, Jane Eyre was radical for its time, written in the first person and unapologetic in its exploration of female independence, desire and moral conviction.

Jane’s journey from orphaned child to governess at Thornfield Hall — where she falls for the complicated and brooding Mr. Rochester — has inspired generations of readers and filmmakers alike. Past adaptations include the 2011 film starring Mia Wasikowska and Michael Fassbender, and the critically-acclaimed 2006 BBC miniseries led by Ruth Wilson and Toby Stephens.
