Today, I saw something I genuinely didn’t expect from the Portugieser.
For the first time ever, IWC Schaffhausen has put its iconic Portugieser Chronograph into full blackout – case, crown, pushers, dial, hands – all in Ceratanium®. Not a dark dial in a steel case. Not a partial treatment. Completely black. And for a watch this classic, that’s a big move.
The Portugieser Chronograph has looked largely the same since 1998. It’s one of those designs that feels almost untouchable – clean, balanced, instantly recognisable. So to see it reimagined in Ceratanium®, IWC’s own material that combines the lightness of titanium with the hardness and scratch-resistance of ceramic, feels significant. It’s not a cosmetic tweak. It’s a shift in attitude.
On the wrist, the 41mm case is shockingly lightweight. You expect something this dark and solid-looking to feel heavy. It doesn’t. It’s smooth, almost silky, but still robust. The finish has this deep, matte metallic quality that absorbs light rather than reflecting it. It’s ultra stealth, yes – but also undeniably sexy.

The black dial with black appliques and hands sharpens the watch’s architecture. Without contrast, your eye focuses on the form: the two vertically aligned subdials, the slim bezel, the precise quarter-second scale. It feels more graphic, more modern. Serious, but there’s still something playful about pushing such a heritage piece into full dark mode.
Inside is the IWC-manufactured 69355 calibre, a mechanical chronograph movement engineered for robustness and reliability, with a 46-hour power reserve. You feel the precision when you press the pushers – crisp, defined, satisfying. This isn’t just aesthetic drama; the engineering backs it up.
It’s also limited to 1,500 pieces, which makes the moment feel even more charged.
The Portugieser has always been elegant. In Ceratanium®, in full black for the first time, it feels bolder. Leaner. More unapologetic. A classic stepping into shadow – and somehow becoming even more powerful because of it.
