A decade on, cult horror flick 'It Follows' is finally getting a sequel

Over a decade after It Follows became a breakout horror hit, star Maika Monroe has teased promising news for fans eager to return to its haunting universe. The actress revealed in a recent interview that writer-director David Robert Mitchell has completed an “exceptional” script for the sequel, which she hopes will begin production as soon as next year.

“I’m hoping – rumours are of next year,” Monroe said, acknowledging that scheduling conflicts have been the primary hurdle. “But this script is so good. I absolutely think this movie should get made, because I think fans will be really happy. I think it’s exceptional. We’ll see. Fingers crossed!”

What do we know so far about the sequel?

Talk of a follow-up began almost immediately after the first film’s success. In 2015, Radius-TWC co-president Tom Quinn hinted at the possibility of continuing the story, but years passed without official confirmation. Finally, in October 2023, Neon and Good Fear Content announced that Monroe and Mitchell would reunite for the sequel, officially titled They Follow.

The new project has been described as bigger, darker, and even more unsettling than the original, though details remain under wraps. For Monroe, who has since built an impressive résumé in genre films, the chance to revisit Jay offers an exciting full-circle moment.

“I think this movie should get made,” Monroe emphasised. “It’s so rare when you read a script that feels both fresh and true to what made the first one resonate. I think fans will really respond to it.”

When will it be released?

If production does indeed start next year, They Follow could arrive just in time to mark the original film’s 12th anniversary in 2027.

What was the original film about?

The 2014 original followed Monroe’s character, Jay Height, a young woman plagued by a relentless supernatural entity passed on through intimacy. Its chilling concept and slow-burn suspense earned widespread acclaim, helping revitalise the horror movie genre. The film holds a 95% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and quickly cemented itself as one of the most inventive horror releases of the decade.
