Jennifer Aniston to star in TV adaptation of ‘I’m Glad My Mum Died’

I'm Glad My Mum Died

While Jennifer Anniston has been a fixture on our screens for decades, her newest role will see her step into somewhat unchartered territory. Specifically, the actor and producer is set to star in a new Apple TV+ drama-comedy inspired by I’m Glad My Mum Died, the searing memoir by former child star Jennette McCurdy.

It's a story that resonated with readers across the globe for its brutal honesty and unexpectedly biting humour so, naturally, we're interested to see Apple TV+s take on it. Below, everything we know about the project so far.

What is I'm Glad My Mum Died it about?

Based on McCurdy’s 2022 memoir, the series will explore the complicated dynamic between a young actress and her controlling, narcissistic mother. Blending drama with dark comedy, it’s set to chart the emotional terrain of co-dependency, fame, and trauma — territory McCurdy detailed with often shocking honesty her book. The show's logline describes the project as centring on “the codependent relationship between an 18-year-old actress in a hit kids’ show, and her narcissistic mum who relishes in her identity as a starlet’s mother.”

McCurdy’s memoir struck a nerve with readers for its candid take on grief, eating disorders, and parental abuse. The upcoming adaptation will aim to preserve that same emotional honesty, balancing vulnerability with humour.

Who is involved?

If you hadn't already guessed, Aniston will star as the mother character. She’ll also executive produce via her production company Echo Films.

McCurdy is co-creating and co-showrunning the show alongside Ari Katcher, known for his work on Ramy and The Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show. Both will serve as executive producers. The creative team also includes heavyweights like Sharon Horgan (Catastrophe), and Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap Entertainment. There's no word yet on who will play the character based on McCurdy herself.

When does it air?

The project is currently in development at Apple TV+, with no confirmed release date just yet. In the meantime, Aniston fans can expect her return in season four of Morning Wars, premiering September 17 — with the story jumping two years forward from the events of last season.
