Today, as part of this year’s Democratic Design Days in Älmhult, Sweden, furniture juggernaut IKEA announced an exciting new designer collaboration with Swedish creatives Gustaf Westman and Evelina Kroon. If the names don't sound familiar – their designs definitely will. Especially if you were as chronically online as we were in the 2020 era of squiggle mirrors and Westman's chunky ceramic plates.
And if IKEA knows anything, it’s how to make a statement through collaboration. Since its first capsule in 1978 with 10-gruppen and the iconic PS collection debut in 1995, the brand has consistently turned to external creatives — from fashion icons like Virgil Abloh and Martin Bergström to artists like Daniel Arsham — to redefine what furniture can be. These limited-edition lines have become collector’s pieces, cult objects that blend utility with storytelling, often selling out within days. As IKEA Range Identity Manager Emma Jones explains, “We collaborate to move forward — to ask new questions, and to reach more of the many people.”

What's in the collection?
The project explores three distinct moods of gathering, each shaped by the designers’ personal lens. The first is rooted in tradition, pulling from IKEA’s archive of communal living and Swedish rituals. The second, imagined by Westman, tilts toward the irreverent – bold forms, punchy colours, and the kind of playful design that speaks to those building their own chosen families. “It’s my take on holidays,” he says. “Looser, louder, and still centred on connection.”
Kroon brings a different tension: memory and modernity. Her pieces rework the scale and detail of childhood holiday moments, reframing them for now. “It’s nostalgic, but not sentimental,” she explains. “It’s about carrying the past forward, not recreating it.”
When is the collection launching?
The complete launch of the IKEA x Gustaf Westman collection will be revealed in September/October 2025.
