Australian actress Gemma Chua-Tran has only just graduated from the third season of Heartbreak High, but already she's proving to be one of Hartley's most successful graduates. She's shedding the character of Sasha for a secret role in Netflix's highly-anticipated live action film, Gundam. Here's what we know so far.
Who else is involved?
Chua-Tran is in very good company once again, joining a star-studded lineup including Sydney Sweeney, Noah Centineo, Michael Mando, and Shioli Kutsuna. At this point however, their character details are yet to be revealed.
The behind the scenes talent is also fairly high profile, with Jim Mickle both writing and directing, as well as producing alongside his partner Linda Moran through their production company Nightshade. Centineo is also on board as a producer.
What is Gundam about?
If Chua-Tran is hoping to avoid being type-cast in another high school trope post-Heartbreak High, this seems like a pretty good role to do it with. Gundam brings to life the legendary Japanese “mecha” franchise, which launched with the anime Mobile Suit Gundam in 1979, created by Yoshiyuki Tomino.
Known for its epic battles featuring giant fighting robots, the franchise has grown into a global phenomenon, generating over $600 million annually across series, films, and merchandise. This live-action adaptation aims to introduce the iconic universe to a new generation of viewers, although exact details on how it aims to tell the story (and who is playing which role — or which robot?) remain pretty tightly under wraps.
When can we watch it?
Netflix has yet to announce an official release date for the film. We'll keep you updated when that happens. Meanwhile, if you're already missing Chua-Tran on your screen, why not watch her in ABC's crime drama Dustfall while you're waiting for more?
