A wig disappears somewhere between one frame and the next. Elsewhere, a bag changes hands – or changes entirely. The street looks much as we left it, thought. And the clothes, too, seem familiar. But stay with the image for long enough and its certainty begins to unravel.
Here, Gucci plays out in near repetition for the pages of our September Let Taste Live issue, photographed by Mia Rankin and styled by Hannah Cooper. Looks return with slight mutations; models Amou Ring and Declan Castle reappear altered by a detail, an accessory, a shift in character. What first presents as a double slowly reveals itself as something else: a parallel version, perhaps, or the memory of a moment reconstructed imperfectly.
There is pleasure in the search. Our eyes move instinctively between the two, tracing hemlines and handbags, hair and jewellery, looking for the interruption. And in doing so, the details we might ordinarily consume in an instant become newly significant. A different silhouette can change the temperature of an entire look. Hair can recast its wearer. The addition or absence of a single object creates another character altogether.
Gucci’s world lends itself to this kind of play. Its codes – especially under Demna – are recognisable, but never static; glamour can sit alongside eccentricity, polish beside something more unruly. Across multiple bodies and against the everyday architecture of the city, clothes become less a final statement than a proposition — something to rearrange, inhabit and reconsider.
