Lena Dunham (basically) just confirmed a ‘Girls’ movie

It’s been nearly a decade since Girls signed off with its final episode, but the cultural grip of Lena Dunham is tighter than ever. Not that anyone really forgot the scale of Dunham’s creative genius — but if there was any doubt, it’s been sharpened in recent weeks with the release of her bestselling memoir, Famesick, which revisits her rapid rise in her early twenties, and the complexities that came with becoming the voice of a generation (to use Hannah Horvath's apt words) almost overnight.

But beyond anything, it's reignited interest in the world she built with Girls. So what better time to revisit it with a follow-up movie than now, right? In an interview with Andy Cohen, Dunham revealed that might actually be more than wishful thinking, admitting she already has a loose plot forming in her mind. Everything we know about a possible Girls movie, below.

The rest of the cast are likely on board

A crucial detail when the characters are as beloved as Marnie, Shosh, Jessa, and Hannah. Dunham shared that she’s still in touch with the original cast, including Jemima Kirke and Andrew Rannells, and that they have a group chat titled ‘Survivors of the Crackcident' (IYKYK).

And they have ideas about where each character is now

It’s impossible not to think about where they are now," Dunham laughed. "I will text with [the cast] and Jemima [Kirke] will pop in with the best take on like, ‘Jess is really into RFK Jr.’ and you’re like, ‘Of course she is. Of course she is.’ She does not want anyone getting vaccines. She is pissed.”

When would the movie come out?

Obviously it would need to be firmed up a little, but Dunham was clear that she doesn't want to do anything too soon. "We don’t want to come back to the party too early. We want to be appropriately missed," she said. So don't expect a reunion just yet, but don't rule it out, either.
