Rain Spencer’s rise from best friend to leading lady is officially underway. After stealing scenes with her witty one liners and unwavering loyalty as Taylor in The Summer I Turned Pretty, Spencer is stepping into the spotlight with her own series. She’s set to star in Genuine Fraud, a new YA thriller from Amazon MGM Studios, based on the bestselling novel by We Were Liars author E. Lockhart. Here's what you need to know.
Who’s involved?
Genuine Fraud brings together key players from two of Amazon’s biggest young adult successes. The show is written and created by Sinead Daly, who penned an episode of TSITP’s third season and has worked across shows like Tell Me Lies and the upcoming adaptation of Midnight Sun.
And author Lockhart, whose We Were Liars became a viral sensation and hit series for Prime Video, will also executive produce, alongside Patrick Moran and Lynley Bird of PKM Productions. In addition to starring, Spencer is also on board as an executive producer.
What is Genuine Fraud about?
Described as a dark and twisty psychological thriller, Genuine Fraud is about on a social chameleon (Spencer) who befriends a wealthy heiress... only to adopt her identity when the heiress goes missing. The story unfolds in a fragmented timeline, designed to keep you guessing until the very end. It’s a sharp pivot from TSITP’s breezy romance, but a very compelling next step for Spencer as she continues to build her repertoire.
And when will it come out?
A release date hasn’t been set yet, but with production underway, we're hoping Genuine Fraud will be with us in 2026. We'll keep you updated as we know more.
