What are Geese and Tame Impala up to?

A serious ripple just moved through the psych-rock universe: Kevin Parker of Tame Impala, along with members of King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Pond, and Geese were recently spotted jamming together in a recording studio in Perth, Australia – and the internet is understandably losing it.

But those in the know will tell you that this isn’t as random as it first seems. These artists are deeply interconnected: Pond members have long served as Tame Impala’s touring band. Jay Watson (Pond) and Ambrose Kenny-Smith (King Gizzard) released a collaborative LP, Ill Times, back in 2024. And Geese opened for King Gizzard on their 2024 U.S. tour. All of them orbit the modern psych-rock ecosystem, particularly in Australia.

Jay Watson and Ambrose Kenny-Smith, in particular, seem like the strongest unifying thread. Some Reddit sleuths are even speculating that this could be another GUM-brose-style collaboration – possibly expanded to include a broader circle of friends. Anyway, we're here to deep dive with you...

Who was there?

According to a video shared by Geese’s touring keyboardist Sam Revaz, the studio session included:

  • Kevin Parker (Tame Impala)
  • Ambrose Kenny-Smith (King Gizzard)
  • Nick Allbrook, Jay Watson, and James Ireland (Pond)
  • Max Bassin, Emily Green, and Sam Revaz (Geese)

And strangely – there were bongos involved.

So… is it a new supergroup or just a hang?

There are a few possibilities. Of course – least likely, but most excitingly – it could be a full-blown psych-rock supergroup. In the spectrum of more likely, we're praying it was a loose collaborative album (à la Ill Times) featuring a few touring artists like Geese (who just polished off their first Aus tour as part of Laneway Festival.) And far more likely (though less exciting for those not in the room where it happened) it was a one-off jam session among friends and something we may never officially hear.

Of course, no formal project has been announced yet – but when Geese and Tame Impala are in a Perth studio with Ambrose, Jay, and Nick Allbrook, odds are something interesting is happening.
