Winter is coming — literally, but also to cinemas. A Game of Thrones feature film is officially in development, with the iconic franchise making its first leap from television to the big screen. It's been seven years since GOT wrapped for the last time, but according to early reports, we're about to expand the Targayren world that first captivated audiences all those years ago. Here's what we know so far.
Who will be involved?
The screenplay is reportedly being written by Beau Willimon, best known as the showrunner behind House of Cards and a writer on Andor. A director has not yet been announced, and no casting details have been confirmed, so it's too soon to know if the likes of Emilia Clark or Sophie Turner will be reprising their roles. Finger's crossed.
The project is in development at Warner Bros.. However, its future could be influenced by the studio’s pending merger with Paramount Skydance. Still, given that Game of Thrones remains one of the studio’s most successful projects, it would be a surprising one to abandon, so we have hope that this will eventually hit screens.
What will the film be about?
While HBO has not confirmed official plot details, the film is widely reported to centre on Aegon I Targaryen and his conquest of Westeros.
For those less versed in the lore: Aegon I — also known as Aegon the Conqueror — founded the Targaryen dynasty centuries before the events of the original television series. His story chronicles the violent unification of the Seven Kingdoms, laying the political and dynastic groundwork for everything that followed.
Although Aegon himself has never appeared on screen, the Targaryen lineage has already proven fertile ground for HBO. Prequel series House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms both explore earlier chapters of the same universe. And, of course, audiences will remember the platinum-haired Daenerys Targaryen — played by Emilia Clarke — whose rise and fall became central to the original saga.
The franchise itself is based on the best-selling novels by George R. R. Martin and originally aired on HBO for eight seasons.
When does it come out?
There is currently no confirmed release date. With the project still in script development and no director or cast attached, the film remains in its early stages. We'll keep you updated.
