With Netflix developing a new drama series centred on the turbulent romance between Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, anticipation is already building around one major question: who will step into Kahlo’s unmistakable shoes?
Directed by Patricia Riggen and Gabriel Ripstein and based on Claire Berest’s novel Rien n’est noir, the series promises an intimate look at the artists’ volatile relationship, creative brilliance and the cultural forces that shaped their lives in Mexico.
But portraying Kahlo is no small task. The revolutionary painter was more than just an artist – she was a symbol of rebellion, vulnerability and a style and beauty icon in her own right. But with casting still under wraps, the speculation has already begun – at least within the four walls of the RUSSH HQ. From established stars to exciting rising talents, these are the actors we think could have what it takes to capture Kahlo’s magnetic presence and complexity.
1. Luna Blaise

Best known for her breakout role in Manifest, Blaise brings an intensity and emotional depth to the screen that we think could translate beautifully to Kahlo’s layered inner world.
2. Paulina Chávez

The Landman actress has already proven herself more than capable in roles that demand both charisma and emotional range – and with her strong screen presence and deep connection to her Mexican roots, we think Chávez could bring an authenticity and youthful fire to Kahlo’s early artistic years.
3. Camila Mendes

We're ready to see the ex-Riverdale alumn take on a biopic – and Kahlo could be the perfect challenge. Mendes has steadily shown a desire to move into more complex, dramatic roles, and her ability to portray emotional contradiction would suit Kahlo’s passionate, often turbulent life.
4. Rachel Zegler

Zegler’s star rose quickly thanks to her powerhouse performances and commanding screen presence. With her expressive vulnerability and musical artistry (let's not forget that Kahlo sang, played guitar, and loved traditional Mexican music), we think she could beautifully capture Kahlo’s romance and the poetic sensibilities.
5. Jenna Ortega

It's been a minute since we've seen Ortega outside the orbit of Tim Burton's gothic worlds – but she's become one of her generation’s most compelling young actors and has a real knack for the nuances of darkness.
6. Isabela Merced

We fell in love with Merced in the latest season of The Last of Us, where she proved she can carry emotionally rich roles with ease. Her Peruvian-American background and natural magnetism are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to reasons why we think she'd be great – but we're really just hoping to see her in more movies full stop.
