Blondie legend Debbie Harry has officially revealed her dream casting choice for the upcoming biopic film about her life – and it’s none other than Florence Pugh.
“If it were somebody like Florence Pugh, I would be in heaven,” the 80-year-old frontwoman told The Sunday Times. “I just think she’s a great actor and she could do anything.”
The potential project is being directed by Aftersun filmmaker Charlotte Wells, who is currently developing two films about Blondie: a documentary and a biopic. While casting hasn’t been confirmed, Harry’s endorsement of Pugh has already set fans abuzz.
And truthfully, it makes perfect sense. Pugh has proven her versatility with powerhouse performances in Midsommar, Don’t Worry Darling, and even a surprising turn in Yungblud’s music video Zombie. On top of her acting chops, she’s no stranger to music – before Hollywood came calling, Pugh uploaded covers to YouTube under the name Flossie Rose, later collaborated with her brother Toby Sebastian, and even wrote original songs for her 2023 film A Good Person.
The admiration, it turns out, is mutual. Back in 2020, Pugh admitted she’d love to play Harry one day, calling Blondie “so cool” during an interview at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. That overlap between Harry’s wish and Pugh’s long-standing dream makes this one of those rare cases where the stars might actually align.

When will the film be released?
The Blondie biopic does not yet have an official release date. With Charlotte Wells attached to direct and early conversations around casting now sparking headlines, the project appears to still be in development. Fans may have to wait a little longer before cameras roll and a premiere window is announced.
Who's in the cast?
At this stage, the only name actively connected is Florence Pugh — though no formal deal has been struck. Debbie Harry herself has publicly voiced her support for Pugh to play her, calling the 29-year-old actor “a great actor” who “could do anything.” Beyond Harry’s wishful casting, no additional actors have been confirmed, but more announcements are expected once the script and production timeline are locked in.

What is it going to be about?
The biopic is expected to chronicle Debbie Harry’s rise from New York’s downtown scene in the 1970s to global stardom as Blondie’s frontwoman. Known for smashing genre boundaries, Blondie fused punk, disco, reggae, and even rap – producing hits like Heart of Glass, Call Me, and Rapture. Beyond the music, Harry’s journey through fame, addiction, style-icon status, and the band’s ups and downs (as detailed in her 2019 memoir Face It) makes her story ripe for cinematic treatment.
Harry’s life, of course, is already cinematic. But Blondie isn’t just living on legacy. The band just finished their twelfth studio album, High Noon, set for release in 2026. As Harry put it: “I don’t have as much endurance, but I can focus my energy a lot better. The new album — we really put it out on that one.”
