All the best dishes the ‘RUSSH’ team dined on in October

If there's one thing the RUSSH editors are more passionate about than fashion it's food. Whether we're debating the merits of our latest matcha latte spots or deep-diving into a roll-call of the best places to grab a steaming hot pot of ramen, we're opinionated, fascinated and always hungry for more.

But in case you were in need of some recommendations of places to eat or recipes to try, we thought it was about time we shared our gustatory opinions outside of the RUSSH HQ walls. And this month, the editors have been devouring some great recs. From deep-fried ice cream cakes to whatever the hell a 'skin bowl' is (you'll find out, below) – this is what the RUSSH editors have been eating this October.

I headed out to Lucky Prawn in Marrickville to try their famed deep-friend Vienetta ice cream cake and it DID NOT disappoint. Flavour-wise it lands somewhere between a Golden Gaytime and a nostalgic flake soft serve. A perfect crowd-pleaser. I also whipped up some of Ellie Bouhadana’s whipped tarragon and confit garlic butter from her Ellie's Table book, alongside a loaf of Avner’s Challah bread. A true match made in heaven.

I recently went to Osteria Mucca in Newtown with a few girlfriends. It was the kind of restaurant that felt like we'd uncovered a secret, even though everyone's already in on it. The menu features cherished family recipes and hard-to-find wines from small vineyards. We started with martinis and oysters (as one should) before ordering a few different meals to share. Do yourself a favour and order the cotoletta di agnello and the ricotta gnudi, both were the undeniable showstoppers of the night.

I’ve been loving dumplings for a super quick and easy dinner lately. I tried this TikTok recipe and loved it – it’s a mix of coconut milk, curry paste, soy sauce, rice wine vinegar, minced garlic, ginger paste and peanut butter into an oven dish with frozen dumplings or gyoza for 25 minutes. Delicious!

I also enjoy baking brownies every few weeks to share with family so I made some this week. I also baked this carrot and parsnip cake for a loved one's birthday over the long weekend. It turned out great – highly recommended.

I recently dined at Grandfather’s, the newest resident of Angel Place. The interior feels reminiscent of a back-drop in a Wong Kar-Wai film – dimly lit booths, fish tanks, Cantonese pop blaring over the speakers. The biggest crowd pleaser was the prawn toast, featuring a bed of oily almond crust. Next up was the Sichuan sashimi, which is packed with an umami flavour – my only gripe, there wasn’t enough to go ‘round. Every dish doesn’t shy away from liberal mounds of Sichuan pepper and an array of chillies. To settle the spice, order a lychee cider (a God-tier beverage if you ask me).

My current hyper-fixation is what I’m calling a skin bowl (I borrowed the concept from the founder of Par Olive, Olivia Boyd-Smith). Basically I take a good quality organic Greek yoghurt and add The Beauty Chef Body Protein, Par Olive Pearl unflavoured marine collagen, goji berries, wild blueberries, chia seeds and some sort of fibre supplement. A very good summer breakfast. Also on my to cook list this weekend is chicken with corn, cream and potatoes, courtesy of Pasta Mama on Instagram.

As for eating out, I was in Melbourne the other week and got a salad sandwich from Good Measure. 10/10, no notes.

I recently got back from a week in Japan with Lexus, and it’s an understatement to say we ate well. It’s nearly impossible to pick a favourite meal, but if I had to choose, it would be the omakase at Tsujifusa in Kyoto. It’s a small Michelin-star restaurant run by a husband and wife, and each course was so simple but so delicious. And at the other end of the spectrum, I have to give an honourable mention to the 7/11 haul I did after a long day of walking in Tokyo. The egg sandwhich really is as good as people say.

My partner took me out to Bush in Redfern for a birthday nibble, and it was incredible as always. We started with fresh oysters and lemon, then had the venison steak and rabbit. I love that they source everything sustainably and you can sit out in the courtyard. Be warned, zips can break when eating there… Whilst I’ve yet to do a home made fondue, I bought a little kit as I made Bagna Cauda for friends to dip radishes in. That much anchovy and garlic should be illegal, but it was in fact heaven.

I generally do most of my meals at home, but it’s been a busy few weeks of birthdays (including my own) so I’ve been out a lot. I did find the time to make a fresh batch of amatriciana. I always like to have some in the freezer. A post-birthday dinner at Busta in Manly was a dining out highlight. I love how this restaurant takes simple ingredients and makes them sing. I also made a recent pit stop to the new Freshwater Brewing Co. tap room and wine bar. It’s very cute.

I haven’t done much cooking this past month as the majority of it I have been away in Paris and Milan. However, that does mean I have had some incredible meals out. When I was in Milan I ate at Bacaro Montenapoleone, which is tucked in an alley across from the Four Seasons Hotel. I had the most delicious ragu ravioli – it was the best pasta in Milan. In Paris, I had a great steak at Cafe Charlot. The peppercorn was great, but if you don't like peppery or spicy things maybe don't order it, because it was quite peppery. Not photographed here was another steak from Cafe Louise in Saint Germain, which might have been the best steak I've ever had, next to the one at Brasserie Lipp, too.

I’ve had a busy few weeks, so have dined out and ordered takeaway more than usual.

I visited the newly opened Grandfathers - it was beyond tasty, and would recommend visiting in a big group so you can try it all. My top picks: the mixed dumplings, tuna sashimi, apple pie dessert, and the cold-cut chicken (I’m pescatarian but didn’t regret trying). Australian-Hungarian spot Corner 75 was another stand-out - it’s so intimate and cozy. Must orders: the sour cream and chive bread (major), pickled beets, and the whole fish in buttery sauce. For takeaway I usually grab a salad or sandwich from S’Wich - it never disappoints.

In October, I'm prioritising cooking and Carolina Gelen is on my recipe moodboard - I’m thinking of remaking her Mediterranean Salmon Tacos this weekend.
