Anyone who grew up or lived in a 70s or 80s home likely has a complicated relationship with dark woods. In decades gone by, Mission brown framing, bad paint jobs and overly warm wood stains gave dark wood a bad name. It led to an all out interior rejection of dark tone, and decades of desire for beachy white washes and soft oak flooring.
But now, as we look towards our favourite interiors, we see deeper and moodier tones reappearing. Architectural Digest recently called it: dark woods are coming back. And as we look for cosiness and comfort in our homes, dark wood offers welcome warmth. It also marks a distinct (and welcome) departure from the white and oak Scandi or beach-house aesthetics that have reigned supreme over the last few years.
Indeed, some of our most-loved interior Instagram accounts have been embracing dark woods with open arms. Adding just a touch, or investing a bold dark wood statement, there's more than one way to invite dark woods back into your home. Below, we've curated the dark wood inspiration you need, and some Instagram accounts we think you should follow.
